APPLE MINCE WALNUT PIE

Apple Mince Walnut Pie image

I came up with this pie several years ago when I was making pies for Christmas and ended up with not quite enough filling for a whole pie. I added mincemeat and walnuts and it was a big hit. This pie is not as intense in flavor as a straight mincemeat pie and even people who are not a big fan of mince pies like it.

Choosing the Ingredients

When making an apple mince walnut pie, it is important to choose the right ingredients. Start with fresh apples that are firm and crisp. Choose a variety of apples that are good for baking such as Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or Braeburn. For the mince, you can either use store-bought mincemeat or make your own. If you choose to make your own mincemeat, make sure to use a mix of dried fruits such as raisins, currants, and cranberries. For the walnuts, choose shelled walnuts that are fresh and not stale. You can either buy them pre-shelled or buy them whole and shell them yourself.

Preparing the Apples

When preparing the apples, make sure to peel them and remove the core. Cut the apples into small bite-sized pieces to ensure they cook evenly. To prevent the apples from browning, you can toss them in lemon juice. You can also add some cinnamon and sugar to the apples to add some extra flavor.

Making the Pie Crust

The pie crust is an important part of the apple mince walnut pie, so it is important to make sure it is done right. To make the crust, you will need all-purpose flour, butter, salt, and ice water. To make the crust, mix the flour and salt together in a mixing bowl. Cut the butter into small cubes and add it to the flour mixture. Use your hands to mix the butter and flour together until it resembles coarse crumbs. Next, add the ice water a little at a time, mixing the dough until it comes together. Roll out the dough on a floured surface until it is about ⅛ inch thick.

Assembling the Pie

Once you have prepared the apples and made the crust, it is time to assemble the pie. Start by placing the bottom crust into the pie dish. Next, add the mincemeat filling and spread it evenly. Add the apple mixture on top of the mincemeat, making sure it is evenly distributed. Sprinkle the walnuts over the top of the apple mixture. Finally, add the top crust and seal the edges of the pie using a fork. Cut a few vents in the top of the crust to allow steam to escape.

Baking the Pie

Baking the apple mince walnut pie is the final step in the process. Preheat your oven to 375°F and bake the pie for 45-50 minutes or until the crust is golden brown. Allow the pie to cool before serving. You can serve it with a dollop of whipped cream or a scoop of vanilla ice cream for an extra delicious treat.
