APPLE GOODIE

Number Of Ingredients 11

Topping:
5 T. butter
1/2 cup flour (whole wheat for a nice nutty flavor)
1/2 brown sugar
1/8 t. baking powder
dash spices -- cinnamon, nutmeg, cardamon as preferred
1/2 cup oatmeal -- traditional or quick cook, not instant
This makes enough for 8x8 pan. Double as needed for larger pans
5 cups apple slices
dash flour and sugar, as needed based on apples
dash cinnamon

Steps:

  • Cut butter into small squares. Add flour, brown sugar, baking powder and spices. Cut with pastry blender until well incorporated but not a dough. Stir in the oatmeal. Set aside. Peel and core apples. Slice into uniformly thin slices. Toss with flour, white sugar and spices -- just enough to draw out juices while baking. Based on the apples, a squeeze of lemon juice might be nice. Place apples into a buttered 8x8 baking dish. Sprinkle on topping, bake at 350 for 30 - 45 minutes. Test with sharp knife - remove when apples are soft throughout. If topping starts to brown before apples are baked through, then cover with foil for remainder of baking time.

Apple goodie is made with sliced or chopped apples, sugar, and various spices like cinnamon and nutmeg. The name "goodie" comes from the fact that this dessert is made with different types of crispy layers. The layers can be made with flour, sugar, and butter to create a crumbly texture. In this article, we'll discuss some valuable tips that can help elevate your apple goodie recipes to the next level.

Tips for Choosing Apples for Your Recipes

The type and quality of apples that you use in your recipes can have a significant impact on the flavor and texture of your apple goodies. Here are some tips to keep in mind when choosing apples for your recipes:

Choose Apples That Are Firm and Fresh

Apples that are fresh and firm tend to hold their shape better in recipes. The best apples for baking are those that are firm and tart, such as Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or Braeburn apples. Sweeter apples like Red Delicious can also be used but may require a bit more sugar to balance the flavors.

Avoid Soft or Mealy Apples

Apples that are soft or mealy can be mushy when cooked and may not hold up well in recipes. Make sure to inspect the apples before buying them and avoid those that have soft spots, bruises or any signs of decay.

Consider Mixing Apple Varieties

You can experiment with different types of apples to create a more complex flavor profile in your apple goodies. A mix of tart and sweet apples can add depth to your recipes.

Tips for Preparing Apples for Your Recipes

Preparing the apples properly is an important step in creating delicious apple goodie recipes. Here are some tips to help you prepare your apples:

Peel and Core the Apples

Peeling and coring the apples is necessary for most recipes. The easiest way to do this is with an apple peeler and corer, but if you don't have one, you can use a peeler and a knife. Make sure to remove all the seeds and the tough core before using the apples in your recipes.

Cut the Apples into Uniform Pieces

When the apples are cut into uniform pieces, they will cook more evenly and create a consistent texture in your recipes. Cut the apples into slices, cubes, or chunks depending on the recipe you're making.

Sprinkle Lemon Juice on the Apples

Lemon juice can help prevent apples from oxidizing and turning brown. Sprinkle lemon juice on the apples before using them in your recipe, or mix them in a bowl with lemon juice until you're ready to use them.

Tips for Baking Apple Goodie Recipes

The baking process is critical for creating the perfect apple goodie. Here are some tips to help you bake your apple goodie recipes to perfection:

Use a Timer

Most apple goodie recipes require precise baking times. Set a timer to ensure that you bake your recipe for the correct amount of time to avoid over or under-baking.

Don't Overwork the Dough

When making dough for pies, tarts, or other apple goodies, it's important not to overwork the dough. Overworking the dough can make it tough and chewy. Mix the dough gently until it comes together, then refrigerate it until ready to use.

Use a Pie Shield

When baking pies, use a pie shield to prevent the edges from burning before the rest of the pie is baked properly. You can also cover the edges of the pie with aluminum foil if you don't have a pie shield.

Cool the Apple Goodies Completely

Cool the apple goodies completely before serving or storing them. This will prevent them from becoming soggy or losing their shape. Once cooled, store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator or at room temperature.

Tips for Adding Flavors to Your Apple Goodie Recipes

You can add a variety of flavors to your apple goodie recipes to enhance the taste. Here are some tips to help you add flavors:

Spices

Spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves pair well with apples and can add warm and cozy flavors to your recipes. Use them in the dough, the filling, or sprinkle them on top of the finished product.

Alcohol

Alcohol like apple cider, brandy, or rum can add a rich depth of flavor to your apple goodies. Add a splash to the filling, the dough, or brush on top of the crust for a beautiful finish.

Nuts

Nuts like walnuts, pecans, or almonds can add a crunchy texture and a nutty flavor to your apple goodies. Chop them finely and sprinkle them on top of your goodies before baking.

Conclusion

Apple goodie recipes can make for a delicious and heartwarming treat during the fall season. By keeping in mind these valuable tips, you can ensure that your apple goodie recipes turn out perfectly every time. Remember to choose fresh and firm apples, prepare them properly, bake them to perfection, and don't be afraid to experiment with different flavors.
