Cornish game hens are a popular choice when it comes to cooking poultry. They are small, very tender and have a delicate flavor, which makes them a perfect centerpiece for a special dinner. One of the best ways to serve Cornish game hens is to create a unique and flavorful glaze, and one of the best glazes is an apple glaze. Apple glazed Cornish game hens recipe can be a delicious treat for any special occasion. Here are some tips to help make your apple glazed Cornish game hens recipe turn out perfect every time.

Tips for Choosing the Right Hens:

When selecting Cornish game hens for your recipe, choose hens that are around 1 to 1 1/2 pounds each. It's important to choose hens of the same size so that they cook evenly. Also, make sure that the hens are fresh and not frozen. Fresh hens tend to have more flavor and tenderness. If you are planning to serve a lot of guests, it's better to purchase extra hens, rather than having your guests go hungry.

Preparing the Hens:

Before you start preparing the glaze, you should prepare the hens. Rinse the hens and pat them dry with paper towels. If the hens have giblets, remove them and discard them. Then, trim any excess fat from the hens using kitchen shears. You can leave the skin on the hens for a crispy texture.

Basting the Hens:

Basting the hens with the apple glaze ensures that the hens are moist and flavorful. It's essential to frequently baste the hens as they cook. When applying the glaze, use a pastry brush or spoon, and be sure to apply it evenly for a beautiful and delicious glaze.

Seasoning:

Seasoning the hens is crucial to making sure that they are flavorful. You can season the hens with salt and pepper before placing them in the oven. However, if you want to add more flavor, you can also use other herbs and spices. Some popular seasoning options include garlic, rosemary, thyme, and sage.

Glaze:

A great apple glaze can take your dish to the next level. A sweet apple glaze adds a wonderful flavor to the Cornish game hens. To make the glaze, use apple juice, brown sugar, Dijon mustard, apple cider vinegar, and a pinch of cinnamon. Mix all of the ingredients together in a saucepan and heat them over medium heat. Whisk the glaze continuously to ensure that the sugar is dissolved and the glaze is smooth. Once the glaze has thickened, remove it from the heat.

Browning the Hens:

Browning the hens adds a beautiful golden crust to the dish. For best results, brown the hens before placing them in the oven. Heat up some oil in a large frying pan and place the hens inside. Cook the hens over medium-high heat until they are golden brown. This should take about 10 minutes.

Using a Meat Thermometer:

When cooking Cornish game hens, it's important to make sure that they are cooked all the way through to prevent foodborne illnesses. To ensure that the hens are cooked to perfection, use a meat thermometer to check the internal temperature. The internal temperature should read at least 165°F.

Resting the Hens:

Once the hens are cooked, remove them from the oven and let them rest for 10 minutes. Resting the hens allows the juices to redistribute, ensuring that the hens are tender and flavorful. Do not cover the hens while they rest, as this can cause the skin to become soggy.

Serving Suggestions:

When serving Cornish game hens with apple glaze, consider serving them with a side of roasted vegetables, garlic mashed potatoes, or a fruity salad. You can also garnish the hens with some extra apples and fresh herbs for presentation purposes.

Conclusion:

Making apple glazed Cornish game hens recipe is a delicious way to serve poultry to your family and friends. By following the above tips, you can make sure that your meal turns out perfectly every time. Remember to choose fresh hens, baste them frequently, season them well, use an excellent glaze, brown them, use a meat thermometer, let them rest, and serve them with other lovely dishes. Enjoy your delicious and flavorful apple glazed Cornish game hens!
