1 cup all-purpose flour
1/4 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
2 Tablespoons sugar
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 large egg
1 1/4 cups buttermilk
4 large apples, such as Fuji or Gala
Vegetable oil, for frying
Homemade or store-bought caramel sauce, for serving

Steps:

  • In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, nutmeg, cinnamon, sugar and salt. In a separate large bowl, whisk together the eggs and buttermilk and then whisk the egg mixture into the flour mixture just until combined. Slice the apples into 1/4-inch-thick rounds. Using the cookie cutters, cut each apple slice into rings, discarding the center core. Add 3 inches of oil to a large heavy-bottomed pot set over medium heat. Line a sheet tray with paper towels. When the oil reaches 350°F on your deep-fry thermometer, begin by dipping each apple slice in the batter, shaking off any excess then carefully lowering it into the oil. Add several apple slices to the oil but do not overcrowd the pot. Flip the apple slices occasionally so that they brown on all sides then using tongs, transfer them onto the paper towel-lined baking sheet. Repeat the battering and frying process with the remaining apple rings. Serve the apple rings immediately with caramel sauce for dipping.

Yield 8

Number Of Ingredients 14

¼ cup warm water (100 to 110 degrees F/40 to 45 degrees C)
1 teaspoon active dry yeast
½ teaspoon white sugar
2 cups all-purpose flour
¼ cup white sugar
¼ teaspoon salt
¼ cup milk, at room temperature
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
1 egg, lightly beaten
½ cup chopped apple
½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
¼ cup purchased or prepared caramel sauce
1 tablespoon hot water, or more as needed
coarse sea salt, as needed

Steps:

  • Stir together warm water, yeast, and 1/2 teaspoon sugar; let stand until foamy, about 5 minutes.
  • Stir together flour, 1/4 cup sugar, and 1/4 teaspoon salt in a medium bowl. Add yeast mixture, milk, oil, and egg; stir until a soft dough comes together. Turn dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead until smooth, 1 to 2 minutes (dough will be sticky). Pat dough into an 8-inch square.
  • Toss together apple and cinnamon in a small bowl, and sprinkle over 1/2 of the dough. Fold the side with no apples over the apples and knead until apples are dispersed, about 30 seconds. Transfer dough to a lightly greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place until doubled in volume, about 1 hour.
  • Lightly flour a piece of parchment paper; set aside. Turn dough out onto a lightly floured surface. Cut into 8 pieces. Pat each portion of dough with floured hands into a 3- to 4-inch oval; fritters do not have to be uniformly shaped. Transfer fritters to the prepared parchment paper, cover loosely with plastic wrap, and let stand until doubled in volume, about 30 minutes.
  • Preheat the air fryer to 360 degrees F (180 degrees C). Preheat the oven to 200 degrees F (95 degrees C). Place a wire rack over a rimmed baking sheet.
  • Place 2 to 3 fritters in a single layer in the preheated air fryer basket and cook until golden brown, about 5 minutes. Remove cooked fritters to the prepared baking sheet and keep warm in the preheated oven. Repeat with remaining fritters.
  • Whisk together caramel sauce and 1 tablespoon hot water, adding more water if necessary, to make a smooth drizzling consistency. Drizzle hot fritters with caramel sauce and sprinkle with sea salt, allowing baking sheet to catch caramel drips and excess salt.

Apple fritter rings with caramel sauce is a delicious dessert that has become increasingly popular across the globe. This dessert is a favorite for many individuals who prefer something sweet and tangy at the same time. If you want to make this dish, it is essential to know some valuable tips to ensure that everything comes out as expected. Tip #1: Choose the right apples for the recipe When it comes to making apple fritter rings, it is crucial to choose the appropriate type of apple. It would be wise to select a firm apple that can hold its shape in the frying process. The best apple types for this recipe include Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or Pink Lady. These apple varieties contain enough sweetness and acidity to create a perfect balance in the final product. Tip #2: Use cold ingredients It is recommended that you keep your ingredients as cold as possible when making the dough. This helps to achieve a crispy, flaky texture that is perfect for apple fritter rings. Keep your butter, milk, and eggs in the refrigerator until you need them. Also, it would be best to place the dough in the refrigerator for at least one hour before preparing the rings. Tip #3: Slice the apples evenly When making apple fritter rings, always ensure you cut the apples evenly. This ensures that they cook evenly and hold their circular shape as they fry in oil. A mandolin slicer is the best tool to use because it creates even slices. Alternatively, you can use a sharp knife to cut the apple rings. Tip #4: Avoid overcrowding the frying pan When frying the rings, it's tempting to add as many as possible to the frying pan. However, this may cause the rings to stick together, affecting the overall appearance and quality of the dessert. Therefore, it's best to fry the rings in small batches, ensuring there is enough space between them to avoid sticking. Tip #5: Use a non-stick pan When frying apple fritter rings, using a non-stick pan is a great idea. This will ensure that the rings don't stick, and you won't have to worry about using too much oil. If you don't have a non-stick pan, you could sprinkle some flour or cornmeal on the pan to prevent sticking. Tip #6: Coat the rings evenly It's essential to coat the rings evenly to ensure a crispy, crunchy texture. Pat the apple slices dry with a paper towel before dipping them in the batter. Additionally, roll them in the coating mixture until they are well-coated. Tip #7: Drain excess oil Once you have fried the apple fritter rings, it is essential to drain the excess oil. You can do this by placing the rings on a paper towel-lined plate. This helps remove any excess oil, ensuring that the rings remain crispy and not overly greasy. Tip #8: Make the caramel sauce in advance Caramel sauce is the perfect addition to apple fritter rings. It's essential to make the caramel sauce in advance to ensure that it has enough time to thicken and cool. This will make the sauce easier to pour over the rings, and it will form a beautiful layer of sauce over the dessert. Tip #9: Add a pinch of salt Adding a pinch of salt to the caramel sauce can help enhance the overall flavor of the dessert. Salt helps to balance the sweetness of the caramel, making the fritter rings even more enjoyable. Tip #10: Serve warm Apple fritter rings are best served warm. It is advisable to serve them immediately after frying and adding the caramel sauce. This ensures that they remain crispy on the outside and warm and gooey on the inside. Conclusion: Making apple fritter rings with caramel sauce can be a fun and rewarding experience. However, as with any recipe, it's essential to follow some valuable tips to ensure that the dish comes out perfect. By following the tips discussed above, individuals can enjoy this delicious dessert with their family and friends.
