CARAMEL APPLE DUMPLINGS

Caramel Apple Dumplings image

Yes, yet another apple dumpling recipe! Taste it, is really good and you will like it. My mother used to make these for dinner parties when I was young. Found this on Diana's Desserts, 2003 Diana Baker Woodall posted in February of that year. The sauce can be made up to 3 weeks ahead, chill in airtight container and the dumplings can be made up to 1 day ahead - chill sauce, dumpling and egg mixture separately in airtight container. Just bake chilled dumplings as directed.

SPICED BOURBON CARAMEL SOUCE
2 c water
1 c sugar
2 Tbsp bourbon
3/4 c packed brown sugar
4 tsp unsalted butter
1 tsp ground cinnamon
1/2 tsp freshly grated nutmeg
1/4 tsp ground cloves
3/4 tsp salt
DUMPLING DOUGH
2 c all-purpose flour
1/2 tsp salt
2/3 c shortening
2 to 3 Tbsp ice cold water
APPLES
6 tart apples (like granny smith) peeled and cored
1/4 c packed brown sugar
1/4 c sugar
1 tsp ground cinnamon
pinch salt
2 Tbsp unsalted butter, cut into 6 pieces
GARNISH WITH ICE CREAM

Steps:

  • 1. Pre-heat oven to 500 degrees F. To make the sauce, combine "sauce" ingredients in a small saucepan over medium heat; bring to boil, reduce to low simmer 5 minutes, cook and stir until sugar dissolves. Remove from heat.
  • 2. To make the dough, combine ingredients except the water and use a pastry blender to cut in shortening. Add 2 tablespoons of water and stir to combine. Add more water, 1 teaspoon at a time, until dough is sticking together but not sticky. Dump on a floured surface and knead, work into a ball. Divide and form into 6 balls. Wrap tightly in plastic wrap and refrigerate until ready to roll out. Roll each dough ball into a large square - large enough to wrap around the apple.
  • 3. Set an apple in the center of each square. Mix together sugar and cinnamon; sprinkle over apples. Bring sides of dough together to cover apples; press to seal. Place seam-side down in a greased 13"x9" baking pan. Pour caramel sauce over dumplings.
  • 4. Bake at 500 degrees for 5 to 7 minutes. Reduce heat to 350 degrees; bake for an additional 35 to 40 minutes, until golden and apples are tender. Serve with a scoop of ice cream and drizzled with sauce.

Whether you're making this dessert as a treat for yourself or to impress your guests, here are some valuable tips that will help you create the perfect apple dumplings with spiced bourbon caramel sauce recipes.

Choosing the Right Apples

The type of apple you choose can make a big difference when making apple dumplings. You want to choose an apple that will hold its shape and not turn to mush during the baking process. Some good apple varieties for dumplings include Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, Rome, and Braeburn.

Preparing the Apples

Before you begin making your apple dumplings, make sure you prepare the apples correctly. The first step is to peel and core the apples. Once you've done this, slice them into quarters or eighths, depending on the size of the apple.

Using the Right Dough

The dough used for apple dumplings should be light and flaky. You can use a traditional pie dough, but a biscuit-like dough can work just as well. When making the dough, be sure to handle it lightly to avoid making it tough.

Spicing It Up

To add depth of flavor to your apple dumplings, consider adding some spices. Cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves work well together to create a warm and comforting flavor profile. You can also add some lemon zest for a little bit of tang.

Creating the Caramel Sauce

The key to a perfect spiced bourbon caramel sauce is timing. Make sure you keep an eye on the sauce, and don't leave it unattended. You want it to come to a slow boil, but be careful not to let it boil over. Once the sauce is ready, pour it over the dumplings while they're still warm.

Baking the Dumplings

When baking the apple dumplings, make sure you place them in a baking dish with a high rim to catch any overflow of the caramel sauce. You can also brush the dumplings with a little bit of melted butter before placing them in the oven to create a nice golden crust.

Serving Suggestions

There are many ways to serve apple dumplings with spiced bourbon caramel sauce. Some people like to serve them warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top. Others prefer to serve them with a dollop of whipped cream. You can also drizzle some extra caramel sauce over the top for an extra hit of sweetness.

Conclusion

Making apple dumplings with spiced bourbon caramel sauce is a delicious and satisfying dessert that's perfect for warming up on a chilly night. By following these valuable tips, you'll be able to create a dessert that's not only delicious but also impressive.
