Pancakes are one of the most popular breakfast foods of all time. They are quick to prepare, delicious and easy to make. In this article, we will discuss some valuable tips when making apple cinnamon einkorn pancakes recipes.

What is Einkorn Flour?

Einkorn flour is an ancient wheat variety that has been around for thousands of years. It is a nutritious, healthy and delicious alternative to regular wheat flour. Compared to the modern wheat used in most flours today, Einkorn flour has higher levels of protein, fiber, and minerals.

Choosing the Right Apples

When making apple cinnamon einkorn pancakes, it is important to choose the right kind of apples. Tart apples, such as Granny Smith or Honeycrisp, are the best choice because they hold up better during cooking and add a nice tartness to the pancakes. Avoid using sweet apples, like Red Delicious, as they break down too easily and can make the pancakes soggy.

Preparing the Apples

Before adding the apples to the pancake batter, it is important to sauté them in butter and cinnamon to bring out their natural sweetness and flavor. Cut the apples into small, bite-sized pieces and cook them in a pan with a tablespoon of butter and a half-teaspoon of cinnamon until they are tender and caramelized.

Using Einkorn Flour

When using einkorn flour, it is important to know that it has different properties from regular wheat flour. Einkorn flour has a lower gluten content, which means that it does not rise as much as regular flour, resulting in denser pancakes. To combat this, it is recommended to mix the batter just until the ingredients are combined, rather than over-mixing, which can cause the pancakes to become tough and chewy.

Measuring the Flour

Measuring the flour correctly is crucial when making pancakes. Too much flour can result in dry, tough pancakes, while too little flour can make them too thin and runny. It is best to use a digital scale to measure the flour accurately, but if you don’t have one, lightly spoon the flour into the measuring cups and level it off with a straight edge.

Buttermilk vs. Regular Milk

Using buttermilk in pancake batter is a game-changer. It adds a tangy flavor, tenderizes the pancakes and reacts with the leavening agents to make the pancakes light and fluffy. If you don’t have buttermilk, you can substitute it with regular milk and add a tablespoon of lemon juice or vinegar to it to make it acidic.

Resting the Batter

Letting the pancake batter rest for a few minutes before cooking is essential. This allows the gluten in the flour to relax and the leavening agents to activate, resulting in lighter and fluffier pancakes. It also gives the flavors in the batter time to meld together.

Adding the Apples to the Batter

When adding the sautéed apples to the pancake batter, it is best to gently fold them in with a rubber spatula rather than stirring vigorously. This ensures that the apples are evenly distributed throughout the batter, and prevents the pancakes from becoming tough.

Cooking the Pancakes

When cooking the pancakes, it is important to use a lightly oiled or buttered non-stick pan or griddle. Too much oil or butter can cause the pancakes to become greasy, while too little can cause them to stick to the pan. Use a ladle or measuring cup to portion out the batter, and cook the pancakes until they are golden brown on both sides.

Serving the Pancakes

When serving the apple cinnamon einkorn pancakes, top them with maple syrup, whipped cream, or a dollop of apple butter. They also pair well with a side of crispy bacon or sausage links, and a hot cup of coffee.

Conclusion

Apple cinnamon einkorn pancakes are a delicious and healthy twist on a classic breakfast food. Following these valuable tips will ensure that your pancakes come out perfectly every time. From choosing the right apples to using the correct amount of flour, each step is important in creating a flavorful and satisfying meal.
