RECIPE INGREDIENTS
For the Topping:
1 cup coarsely chopped pecans
3/4 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/4 teaspoon ground allspice
1/8 teaspoon ground cloves
Pinch of salt
3/4 cup quick-cooking rolled oats
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1/2 cup firmly packed light brown sugar
3/4 cup unsalted butter, chilled, cut into small pieces
For Filling:
8 Golden Delicious apples, about 2 1/2 pounds total weight
3 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
1/2 cup dried cranberries

Steps:

  • DIRECTIONS Preheat an oven to 350 degrees F. Butter a 9-by-12-inch oval baking dish. FOR THE TOPPING: Spread the pecans on a baking sheet and bake until lightly toasted, 5-7 minutes. Remove from the oven and let cool. In a large bowl, stir together the flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, cloves and salt. Add the toasted pecans, rolled oats, granulated sugar, brown sugar and butter. Using your fingertips, rub the mixture together until it resembles coarse crumbs. Set aside. FOR THE FILLING: Peel, halve and core the apples, then cut lengthwise into slices 1/2 inch thick. Place in a bowl, immediately add the lemon juice and dried cranberries and toss to coat with the juice. Pour the filling into the prepared dish, leveling the surface. Sprinkle the topping evenly over the fruit, pressing down on it lightly and leaving about 1/4 inch space between the topping and the pan sides. Bake until the topping is golden brown and bubbling, 40-45 minutes, covering the top with aluminum foil if the crust begins to overbrown. Transfer to a rack and let cool for 15 minutes before serving

Choose the Right Apples

The first step in making the best apple and dried cranberry crisp recipes is choosing the right apples. Not all apples are suitable for this dessert. You need to choose apples that are firm and crisp, such as Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or Pink Lady apples. These types of apples hold their shape and texture when baked, which is essential for a good apple crisp.
How to Prepare Apples for the Crisp
Once you have selected the right apples, you need to prepare them for the crisp. Start by peeling and coring the apples. Then, cut them into thin slices or small chunks, depending on your preference. Make sure the apples are evenly sized to ensure even cooking. You can toss the apple pieces with lemon juice to prevent browning.

Add the Right Amount of Sugar

Another important tip when making apple and dried cranberry crisp is to add the right amount of sugar. The amount of sweetness you add will depend on the tartness of the apples and your personal preference. However, be careful not to add too much sugar as it can make the dessert too sweet and overpowering.
How to Make the Sugar Topping
To make the sugar topping for the apple crisp, you need to mix flour, sugar, and spices in a bowl. Then, cut in cold butter until the mixture resembles coarse breadcrumbs. This sugar topping adds crunch and texture to the crisp and complements the sweetness of the apples and dried cranberries.

Use Dried Cranberries

Dried cranberries are an essential ingredient in apple and dried cranberry crisp recipes. They add a tart and fruity flavor to the dessert, which complements the sweetness of the apples. Dried cranberries are also a good source of vitamins and antioxidants, making them a healthier option compared to other sugary fruits.
How to Prepare Dried Cranberries
To prepare dried cranberries, you need to soak them in warm water for a few minutes until they become plump and soft. Then, drain the excess water and pat them dry with a paper towel. You can also add a little bit of sugar to the dried cranberries to enhance their sweetness.

Use Spices to Add Flavor

Spices are an important component of apple and dried cranberry crisp recipes. They add depth and complexity to the dessert and complement the natural sweetness of the apples and dried cranberries. Cinnamon, nutmeg, and ginger are popular spices to use in apple crisp recipes, but you can also experiment with other spices such as cardamom or allspice.
How to Use Spices
To use spices in apple and dried cranberry crisp, you can mix them into the sugar topping or sprinkle them over the apple slices before adding the sugar topping. You can adjust the amount of spices depending on your preference, but be careful not to overpower the dessert with too much spice.

Add Texture with Oats and Nuts

To add texture and crunch to the apple and dried cranberry crisp, you can include oats and nuts in the sugar topping. Rolled oats add a chewy texture to the dessert, while nuts such as pecans or walnuts add a nutty flavor and crunchiness.
How to Add Oats and Nuts
To add oats and nuts to the sugar topping, you need to mix them with the flour, sugar, and spices. You can also sprinkle the oats and nuts over the apple slices before adding the sugar topping. The amount of oats and nuts you add will depend on your preference, but be careful not to add too much as it can overpower the dessert.

Bake at the Right Temperature and Time

The final step in making the best apple and dried cranberry crisp recipes is baking at the right temperature and time. The oven should be preheated to 375°F, and the crisp should be baked for 35-40 minutes until the topping is golden brown and the apples are tender. If the topping is browning too quickly, you can cover it with foil to prevent burning.
How to Serve the Apple and Dried Cranberry Crisp
Once the apple and dried cranberry crisp is baked, let it cool for a few minutes before serving.
