TOASTED ALMOND FRUIT SALAD

Toasted Almond Fruit Salad image

"Love the idea of a simple fruit salad with chopped almonds that is tossed together a few hours before serving and left to marinate. Then, at the last minute, toss in the nuts (that have been baked with sugar and dry ginger). Top with sorbet and basil as a light, refreshing treat."-- Alex Guarnaschelli

Provided by Fisher® Nuts

Time 27m

Yield 8 servings

Number Of Ingredients 11

1 1/4 cups, divided sugar
2 tablespoons lemon juice
2 teaspoons granted lemon zest
1 cup (4 ounces) Fisher® Chef's Naturals Sliced Almonds
1 teaspoon dry ginger
pinch of salt
pints blackberries
pints raspberries
2 1/2-inch slices cored, quartered, and cut Granny Smith apples
1 pint sorbet
1/4 cup small basil leaves

Steps:

  • Make the syrup: In a small saucepan, bring ½ cup water and ½ cup of the sugar to a simmer and cook until the sugar dissolves, 2-3 minutes. Remove from the heat and transfer to a small bowl. Add the lemon juice and zest. Refrigerate.
  • Caramelize the nuts: Rinse out the pan used to make the syrup and dry well. Add the remaining ¾ cup sugar and enough water for it to look like wet sand. Cook over medium heat until the sugar caramelizes and browns, 5-8 minutes. Add the almonds and carefully stir to coat the nuts with the caramelized sugar. Season with the dry ginger and a pinch salt. Transfer to a baking sheet to cool and harden. When hard, break into bite size pieces.
  • Assemble the salad: Toss the blackberries, raspberries and apple slices with the lemon syrup in a large bowl. Refrigerate until ready to serve. The colder the fruit, the better. When ready to serve, top with the almond brittle, a ¼ cup scoop of raspberry sorbet and the basil leaves. Serve immediately.

Apple almond tossed salad recipes are a perfect blend of tangy and sweet flavors that make your taste buds go wild. These versatile salad recipes use fresh, delicious ingredients that can be easily customizable, so you can create your unique salad every time. In this article, we are going to share valuable tips on how to make this scrumptious dish.

Tip #1 - Choose the right apples

The foundation of any apple almond tossed salad recipe is, of course, the apples. While any apple variety can work, a crisp and firm apple-like Honeycrisp or Granny Smith provides an excellent textural contrast to the soft greens and smooth dressing. Plus, they offer a delicious tart flavor that balances well with the sweetness of the other ingredients in the salad.

Tip #2 - Add almonds for crunchiness

Almonds are an essential component of an apple almond tossed salad recipe. Adding almonds to this salad provides a nice crunch layer and nutrition to satisfy your hunger for longer. Adding roasted almonds adds a nutty and smoky flavor, enhancing the overall taste of the salad. For a pleasant contrast, you can also use different nuts such as pecans, hazelnuts, or walnuts.

Tip #3 - Mix and match textures

The best apple almond tossed salad recipes have a perfect blend of textures. The crunchy nuts, crisp and firm apple, smooth dressing, and soft greens offer a delightful assortment of textures in each bite. You can mix and match flavors and textures based on your personal preference. Add croutons or crispy bacon to supplement the crunchiness or avocado for a perfectly smooth texture.

Tip #4 - Vary the dressing

The dressing is the soul of the salad. Apple almond tossed salad recipes often use a vinaigrette dressing, mixing sour and sweet flavors, which work perfectly with the apple's tartness. However, you can also experiment with different dressing recipes, like a creamy ranch or honey mustard. Just ensure that the dressing works well with the other ingredients in the salad.

Tip #5 - Use fresh greens

The greens in your apple almond tossed salad recipe play a crucial role in the overall flavor and texture. Be creative and mix different greens such as spinach, romaine lettuce, arugula, or any other greens of your choice. Ensure the greens are fresh and crisp to blend nicely with the other ingredients in the salad. You can also add fresh herbs like basil, parsley or cilantro for additional flavor.

Tip #6 - Watch out for the sweetness

Many ingredients in apple almond tossed salad recipes tend to be naturally sweet, such as apple, dried cranberries, and honey mustard dressing. So while adding sweetness in the form of sugar, honey, or syrup seems tempting, avoid going overboard as it can overpower the salad's delicate flavors. Alternatively, increase the sour or acid flavor by adding citrus zest, vinegar, or lemon juice.

Tip #7 - Keep it simple

One of the biggest mistakes people make while making apple almond tossed salad recipes is to clutter the dish with too many ingredients. Keep it simple and stick to the essential ingredients like apples, almonds, greens, and dressing that create a perfect balance of flavors and textures.

Conclusion

In conclusion, apple almond tossed salad recipes are a perfect blend of tangy and sweet flavors that excite your taste buds.
