ANGEL HAIR PASTA WITH SIMPLE GARLIC & BASIL

Angel Hair Pasta With Simple Garlic & Basil image

I adore angel hair pasta, and such a fine pasta doesn't always need a big sauce. Serve with some kind of cheese or "cheez" if you wish, sprinkled on top. My children like it with sliced olives. There are many versions of this simple recipe, this one I adapted from www.cookingnook.com. This would probably be good for 4 as a side dish or 4 for lunch with a salad.

Categories     Spaghetti

Time 35m

Yield 3-4 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 9

2 tablespoons olive oil
2 garlic cloves, minced
1/2 cup dry white wine
1 lemon, juice of
1 tomatoes, diced
sea salt, to taste
8 ounces angel hair pasta
1/4 cup fresh basil, roughly chopped
pepper, to taste

Steps:

  • Bring a large pot of salted water to boil over high heat.
  • Meanwhile, heat the olive oil up a large saute pan over medium heat. Once warm add the garlic and cook until it just begins to brown -- too long or too high and the garlic will burn.
  • Remove the pan from the heat and deglaze by pouring in the wine. Return the pan to the heat and cook for a few minutes. The wine should reduce by about half. Add in lemon juice, chopped tomato, and sea salt to taste. Stir once or twice then remove the pan from the heat again and set it aside to wait for the pasta.
  • Add the pasta to the boiling water and cook until desired tenderness, following package directions. Drain, then add the cooked pasta to the pan with the garlic & tomato mixture, along with the basil and some freshly ground pepper. Toss well, (if your pan isn't big enough, just do the tossing in a large serving bowl).
  • *Tip: 4 ounces of uncooked pasta (spaghetti, angel hair, vermicelli, fettuccine or linguine) = a 1-inch diameter bunch of dry pasta = 2 cups cooked pasta. Generally they say 2 ounces of pasta is one serving, but for larger appetites this might not be enough.

Angel Hair Pasta with Olives, Pine Nuts, and Basil: Valuable Tips

Angel hair pasta with olives, pine nuts, and basil is a simple yet delicious Italian dish that can be made in no time. The combination of tangy olives, crunchy pine nuts, and aromatic basil with the tender angel hair pasta will create an explosion of flavors in the mouth. However, you need to be careful while preparing this dish as a few mistakes can ruin the taste. Here are some valuable tips that can help you prepare the perfect angel hair pasta with olives, pine nuts, and basil.
1. Cook the Pasta until Al Dente
Cooking the pasta for the right amount of time is crucial. Angel hair pasta is thin and delicate, and it can become mushy easily if overcooked. Make sure you cook the pasta until it is al dente, which means that it is cooked but still firm when bitten. You can taste the pasta a minute or two before the cooking time ends to ensure it is perfect.
2. Toast the Pine Nuts
Toasting the pine nuts will elevate the flavors of the dish. Pine nuts have a sweet and nutty flavor that becomes even better when toasted. You can toast the pine nuts in a skillet without any oil over medium heat until they turn golden brown. Be careful not to burn them because they can go from toasted to burnt quickly.
3. Use High-Quality Ingredients
One of the key factors that determine the taste of a dish is the quality of ingredients used. Use high-quality extra virgin olive oil, fresh garlic, fresh basil, and good quality olives to create a dish that tastes fresh and delicious. You can also use ripe cherry tomatoes to add some color and flavor to the dish.
4. Don't Overdo the Garlic
Garlic is a crucial ingredient in this dish, but you need to be careful while using it. Garlic has a strong flavor, and adding too much of it can overpower the other flavors in the dish. One or two cloves of garlic are enough for this recipe. You can crush the garlic cloves and sauté them in olive oil until they become fragrant.
5. Add Salt to the Pasta Water
Adding salt to the pasta water is an essential step that many people skip. Adding salt will enhance the flavor of the pasta and give it a subtle taste. You can add one tablespoon of salt to four to six quarts of water while boiling the pasta.
6. Reserve Pasta Water
Reserving pasta water is a common practice in Italian cooking. The starchy pasta water can be used to thicken and enhance the flavor of the sauce. Reserve a cup of pasta water and add it to the sauce while cooking. The pasta water will add a silky texture to the sauce.
7. Use a Large Skillet
Using a large skillet to cook the sauce is important. The angel hair pasta needs to be swirled with the sauce, and a small skillet may not be sufficient. Use a large skillet to toss the pasta with the sauce and coat it evenly.
8. Toss the Pasta with the Sauce Immediately
After cooking the pasta and sauce separately, toss the pasta with the sauce immediately. Angel hair pasta tends to stick together, and tossing it with the sauce will prevent it from clumping together. Use a pair of tongs to swirl the pasta with the sauce and coat it evenly.
9. Save Some Basil for Garnishing
Adding fresh basil to the dish enhances its aroma and flavor. However, adding all the basil while cooking the dish may wilt it. Save some basil leaves for garnishing the dish. You can sprinkle some basil leaves over the dish just before serving.
10. Serve Immediately
Angel hair pasta with olives, pine nuts, and basil is best served hot. Serve the pasta immediately after tossing it with the sauce. Waiting too long before serving it may make the pasta sticky and affect its texture. In Conclusion Angel hair pasta with olives, pine nuts, and basil is an easy-to-make dish that can be customized according to your taste. Follow these valuable tips to create a dish that is perfect in taste and texture. With the right ingredients and by avoiding some common mistakes, you can create a delicious meal that will leave your taste buds wanting more.
