AMERICAN KITCHEN CLASSIC THE GOBBLER SANDWICH
The classic day after Thanksgiving sandwich, this recipe is the equivalent of eating Thanksgiving dinner all over again but in one simple sandwich. Some people, who shall remain nameless, do The Gobbler as an open faced sandwich to which they pour warmed up leftover gravy over the top of each piled high slice and dig in with knife and fork. You can also dip the sliced turkey into leftover gravy when building your sandwich. So many ways to make and so little time to eat....

The History of the Gobbler Sandwich
While the Gobbler Sandwich has become a Thanksgiving staple, its existence can be traced much further back in history. The sandwich originated in the Northeast region of the United States, where hunting and outdoor activities were commonplace. It was initially known as the "Goose Sandwich," and it was commonly made using goose meat slow-cooked in gravy and served on bread. Over time, the goose meat was replaced by turkey, which was more readily available and affordable.Ingredients
The perfect Gobbler Sandwich recipe can vary depending on personal preferences. Common ingredients include:- Roasted turkey
- Cranberry sauce
- Stuffing
- Gravy
- Bread or bread rolls
- Salt and Pepper
- Mashed potatoes (optional)
- Sliced Cheese (optional)
Preparation
Making a Gobbler Sandwich involves four main steps: preparing the turkey, preparing the stuffing, making the cranberry sauce, and toasting the bread. The following is a step-by-step guide to making a perfect Gobbler Sandwich:Preparing the turkey
The key to making a great Gobbler Sandwich is the roasted turkey. The turkey must be cooked perfectly, neither over nor undercooked, to attain that tender and juicy flavor. Here is how you can prepare your turkey:- Preheat your oven to 350°F.
- Remove the turkey from the fridge and place it in a roasting pan.
- Season the turkey with salt and pepper evenly.
- Cover the turkey with a foil and put it in the oven.
- Allow the turkey to cook for approximately 3-4 hours or until the internal temperature has reached 165°F.
- Remove the turkey from the oven and let it rest for at least 20 minutes before slicing.
Preparing the stuffing
The stuffing is an essential component of the Gobbler Sandwich. It provides a flavorful and aromatic element to the sandwich. Here is how to make the stuffing:- Melt 2 tablespoons of butter in a frying pan over medium heat.
- Add diced onion, celery, and garlic to the frying pan, cook until soft for about 5 minutes.
- Add 2 cups of bread crumbs to the frying pan and cook for a further 2 minutes.
- Add 1 cup of chicken broth to the mixture and stir until the ingredients are combined.
- Add salt and pepper to the mixture according to your taste.
- Cover the mixture and let it cook for about 10 minutes or until the stock is absorbed.
- Remove the mixture from heat and let it cool down.
Making the Cranberry sauce
The Cranberry sauce adds a sweet and tangy flavor to the sandwich. Here's how to make it:- Add 1 bag of fresh cranberries to a saucepan with 1 cup of fresh orange juice.
- Cook the mixture over medium heat until the cranberries start to burst, stirring occasionally.
- Add 1 cup of sugar to the mixture and continue to cook for about 5-7 minutes or until the sauce has thickened.
- Let the mixture cool down.
Assembling the Gobbler Sandwich
Now that you have all the ingredients ready, let's assemble the Gobbler Sandwich:- Toasting the bread: Cut the bread or rolls in half and toast them lightly in a toaster or oven.
- Place the bottom half of the roll on a plate.
- Spread a layer of stuffing over the bread, add sliced turkey on top of it.
- Drizzle the cranberry sauce over the turkey.
- Pour some gravy on top of the cranberry sauce.
- If preferred, add a layer of mashed potatoes and a slice of cheese.
- Close the sandwich with the top half of the roll.
- Repeat the process with the remaining bread rolls.
- Serve and enjoy!
