Time 1h

Yield 8 individual crisps

Number Of Ingredients 14

1 cup all-purpose flour
1 cup granulated sugar
1/2 cup packed light brown sugar
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon salt
Dash nutmeg
1 1/2 sticks cold butter
1/2 cup slivered almonds
Four 12-ounce bags frozen tart cherries
1/4 cup cornstarch
2 teaspoons almond extract
2 cups heavy cream
2 tablespoons granulated sugar
Vanilla ice cream, optional

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
  • Start with the crumb mixture. In a medium bowl, combine the flour, brown sugar, 1/2 cup granulated sugar, cinnamon, salt and nutmeg.
  • Cut the cold butter into pieces. Add the butter to the bowl and use a fork or pastry blender to cut it into the flour mixture. The mixture should resemble a moist, coarse meal. Add the slivered almonds and combine thoroughly.
  • Place the still-frozen cherries in a bowl, add the remaining 1/2 cup granulated sugar, cornstarch and almond extract and gently stir the cherries to combine.
  • Divide the cherries between 8 ramekins (about 1/2 cup each). Top with the crumb mixture, evening out the surface.
  • Bake until the topping is crisp and golden brown, about 45 minutes. If the topping appears underdone, continue baking in 10 minute increments until it's done.
  • To serve: Add the heavy cream and granulated sugar to the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the whisk attachment and whip. Keep in the fridge until ready to serve.
  • Serve the individual crisps warm or at room temperature with a dollop of freshly whipped cream or vanilla ice cream.

Valuable Tips when Making Almond Fruit Crisp Recipes

Almond fruit crisp is a delicious dessert that combines sweet fruits with crunchy almond topping. This dessert is perfect for any occasion and can be enjoyed all year round. If you want to make the perfect almond fruit crisp, here are some valuable tips you should keep in mind:
1. Choose the Right Fruits
The first thing you need to take into account when making almond fruit crisp is the type of fruit you want to use. You can use any fruit that you like, but it's important to choose fruits that are in season and at their peak of ripeness. This will ensure that your almond fruit crisp is bursting with flavor and sweetness. Some of the best fruits to use in almond fruit crisp recipes include apples, pears, blueberries, raspberries, and strawberries.
2. Balance Sweetness and Tartness
When making almond fruit crisp, it's important to balance sweetness and tartness. You don't want your dessert to be overly sweet, as it can overpower the natural flavors of the fruit. Conversely, you don't want your dessert to be too tart, as it can be unpleasantly sour. So, make sure you use the right amount of sugar to balance the sweetness and tartness of your fruit.
3. Add Texture with Almonds
Almonds are the key ingredient in almond fruit crisp recipes, as they add a crunchy and nutty texture to the dessert. When using almonds, make sure you chop them coarsely so that they add texture to the topping. If you chop them too finely, they will blend in with the topping and lose their crunchiness. You can also use slivered almonds if you want a more delicate texture.
4. Use Oats for a Healthier Dessert
If you want to make your almond fruit crisp recipe healthier, you can use oats instead of all-purpose flour in the topping. Oats are a great source of fiber and can help lower cholesterol levels. They also add a nutty flavor and a crispy texture to your dessert. To make the topping, simply combine oats, flour, sugar, and butter until you have a crumbly mixture.
5. Adjust the Spices to Your Taste
Spices are an important part of almond fruit crisp recipes, as they add depth of flavor and aroma to the dessert. The most common spices used in almond fruit crisp recipes are cinnamon and nutmeg, but you can also use other spices such as ginger, cardamom, and allspice. Adjust the spices to your taste and experiment to find your favorite combination.
6. Serve with Ice Cream or Whipped Cream
Almond fruit crisp is best served warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream. The coolness of the ice cream or whipped cream complements the warm and crispy dessert, creating a perfect balance of temperature and texture. You can also sprinkle some extra chopped almonds on top for added crunchiness.
7. Store Properly
If you have any leftovers, you can store your almond fruit crisp in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to three days. When ready to eat, simply reheat in the oven for a few minutes to restore the crispiness of the topping. Do not freeze almond fruit crisp, as the almond topping will become soggy and lose its texture.
Conclusion
Almond fruit crisp is a delicious and easy dessert that can be customized to your taste. By following these valuable tips, you can make the perfect almond fruit crisp that will impress your friends and family. Remember to choose the right fruits, balance sweetness and tartness, add texture with almonds, use oats for a healthier dessert, adjust the spices to your taste, and serve with ice cream or whipped cream. Enjoy!
