Time 1h45m

Yield 4 sandwiches, plus lots of extra meatloaf

Number Of Ingredients 22

1 tablespoon olive oil
1 small Spanish onion, minced
Salt
3 cloves garlic, minced
1 cup coarsely crushed soda crackers, such as Nabisco Saltine Crackers (about 24 crackers)
1/2 cup whole milk
1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1 teaspoon hot sauce
2 large eggs
Freshly cracked black pepper
1 pound ground beef chuck
8 ounces ground pork
8 ounces ground veal
1/3 cup chopped fresh parsley
1/2 cup ketchup
4 tablespoons brown sugar
4 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
4 slices sharp Cheddar
4 potato rolls, buttered and toasted
Bread and butter pickles (3 to 5 per sandwich)
1 can crispy onions, such as French's French Fried Onions

Steps:

  • For the meatloaf: Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Heat a small skillet over medium heat. Add the oil and onions, season with some salt and saute until translucent, 3 to 5 minutes. Add the garlic and saute for 1 to 2 minutes without letting the garlic brown. Remove from the heat and let cool.
  • In a large bowl, add the crackers, milk, mustard, Worcestershire, hot sauce and eggs. Whisk together, and then sprinkle with salt and pepper. Add the meat, parsley and cooled onions. Mix with your hands until evenly combined. Bake a tester meatloaf patty to taste and test the seasoning, adjusting as necessary. Using your hands, gently form the meatloaf into a loaf about 9-by-5-inches. Place on a baking sheet.
  • For the glaze: In a small bowl, combine the ketchup, brown sugar and apple cider vinegar. Slather half of the glaze over the meatloaf. Make sure not to touch the meatloaf with the spoon and then put that spoon back into the glaze; don't cross contaminate, people! Bake until the meat registers 160 degrees F on an instant-read thermometer, about 1 hour. Let rest for 20 minutes before slicing for sandwiches.
  • For the sandwich build: Place a slice of cheese on the bottom griddled bun, then a slice of meatloaf, spoon some extra glaze on the loaf, pop on a few pickles and top with crispy onions. Repeat to make 3 more sandwiches.

When it comes to sandwiches, nothing can beat the classic American subs. Known for their delicious fillings, unique combinations and generous sizes, subs have become an integral part of the American cuisine, especially among the fast-food lovers. While the traditional subs consist of meat, cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion, and mayo or mustard, the American sub recipes have evolved over the years with different variations and innovative ingredients. From Philly cheese steak subs to barbecue chicken subs, the possibilities are endless.
History of American Subs
The history of American subs goes back to the early 1900s when Italian immigrants started selling sandwiches in their delis using long, crusty bread. These sandwiches were traditionally filled with Italian meats, cheese, and vegetables. However, the modern subs we know today were born in the 1960s when Subway, one of the largest sandwich chains in the world, was founded in Connecticut. Subway popularized the concept of serving customized subs with various breads, meats, vegetables, and sauces. Since then, the sub culture has spread across the country, and now every state has its own unique sub recipes that reflect the local cuisine and flavors.
Types of All American Sub Recipes
American subs are not limited to a specific type of meat or filling. They can be made with anything from roasted beef to grilled chicken, ham, turkey, or even vegetarian options such as avocado or portobello mushrooms. Here are some popular All American sub recipes: 1. Customizing Your American Sub
What makes American subs so popular is their versatility and the ability to customize them according to personal preferences. The bread, meats, cheese, vegetables, sauces, and even the seasoning can be adjusted based on what you like. Some people prefer soft sub rolls, while others like the crunchiness of a baguette. The choice of meat is also critical, and there are endless options to choose from, such as roast beef, ham, turkey, or even seafood like shrimp or crab. Vegetarians can enjoy subs too by adding different types of veggies like lettuce, tomato, cucumber, avocado, or even hummus. A variety of sauces can be used, from classic mayo or mustard to spicy sriracha or sweet honey mustard.

Valuable Tips When Making All-American Sub Recipes Sub sandwiches are an American staple, and for good reason. These sandwiches are easy to prepare, versatile, and can be customized to suit anyone's taste. Whether you're making a sub sandwich for a quick lunch or a family gathering, there are a few tips you can follow to make sure your sub is a hit. In this article, we will discuss some valuable tips that you can use when making all-American sub recipes. Tip #1: Choose the Right Bread The bread is the foundation of any sandwich, and it's no different for sub sandwiches. When making sub sandwiches, you want to choose a bread that is sturdy enough to hold all of the ingredients but not too dense that it overpowers the other flavors. The most common bread used for a sub sandwich is a sub roll, a long, cylindrical roll that is often made from Italian or French bread. However, you can also use a baguette or a hoagie roll. When choosing bread, make sure it's fresh and not too hard or too soft. A hard roll will be difficult to eat, while a soft roll can become soggy quickly. Tip #2: Use High-Quality Meats The meat is the star of the sandwich, and you want to use high-quality meats to ensure that your sub sandwich is delicious. You can use any meat you like, but some of the most popular options include ham, turkey, roast beef, and salami. To get the best quality meat, look for options that are freshly sliced from the deli. You can also cook your own meat at home, but make sure it's cooked to the right temperature and sliced thinly. Tip #3: Add Vegetables for Flavor and Nutrition Vegetables not only add flavor to a sub sandwich, but they also provide important nutrients. You can add any vegetables you like, but some of the most common options include lettuce, tomatoes, onions, cucumbers, peppers, and pickles. When adding vegetables, make sure they're fresh and sliced thinly. You don't want to overpower the other flavors with too much of any one vegetable. Tip #4: Choose the Right Condiments Condiments can make or break a sub sandwich, so it's important to choose the right ones. Some of the most popular condiments for a sub sandwich include mayonnaise, mustard, ketchup, honey mustard, and olive oil. When choosing condiments, consider the flavor profile of your sandwich. You don't want to use a condiment that will overpower the other flavors. Tip #5: Season Your Meat and Vegetables Seasoning your meat and vegetables can add an extra layer of flavor to your sub sandwich. You can use any seasoning you like, but some popular options include salt, pepper, garlic powder, oregano, and basil. When seasoning, be careful not to use too much. The meat and vegetables should be seasoned lightly to enhance their natural flavors. Tip #6: Toast Your Sandwich Toasting your sub sandwich can give it a nice crunch and help the flavors meld together. You can toast your sandwich in the oven or on a panini press. When toasting your sandwich, make sure the bread doesn't get too hard. You want a nice crunch, but not a crouton. Tip #7: Use Fresh Ingredients Using fresh ingredients is key to making a delicious sub sandwich. Make sure all of your ingredients are fresh and of high quality. If you're using produce, make sure it's not too ripe or too old. The meat should be freshly sliced or cooked, and the bread should be fresh. Tip #8: Keep it Simple Sometimes less is more, and that's true when it comes to making a sub sandwich. Don't try to add too many ingredients or condiments, as it can become overwhelming. Stick to a few high-quality ingredients and let the flavors speak for themselves. In Conclusion: Sub sandwiches are a popular American food that can be customized to anyone's taste. When making a sub sandwich, it's important to choose the right bread, use high-quality meats, add vegetables for flavor and nutrition, choose the right condiments, season your meat and vegetables, toast your sandwich, use fresh ingredients, and keep it simple. By following these tips, you can make a delicious sub sandwich that everyone will love.
