Provided by Lauren Allen

Categories     Main Course

Time 25m

Number Of Ingredients 16

15 ounce can black beans (, drained and rinsed)
1/2 green bell pepper
1/2 small onion
2 cloves garlic (, peeled)
1 large egg* (, beaten)
2/3 cup whole wheat breadcrumbs
1 Tablespoon chili powder
1 teaspoon cumin
salt and freshly ground black pepper (, to taste)
4 hamburger buns
desired burger toppings: lettuce, tomato, etc.
1 cup mayonnaise
2 chipotle peppers in adobo sauce
1 Tablespoon adobo sauce ((from can of chipotle peppers in adobo sauce))
2 teaspoons lime juice
salt and freshly ground black pepper

Steps:

  • Mash black beans: Place rinsed and drained black beans in a bowl. If needed, blot them with a paper towel to remove extra moisture. Place in a large bowl and mash well with a fork.
  • Puree Veggies: Place bell pepper, onion and garlic in a food processor and process until finely minced.
  • Strain: Transfer pureed veggie mixture to a fine mesh strainer and use the back of a spoon to press out excess moisture. (If it's too wet, the burger wont hold together as well.)
  • Combine: Add the strained vegetable mixture to the bowl with the black beans. Add the chili powder, cumin and salt and pepper and stir to combine. Add beaten egg and mix. Stir in bread crumbs.
  • Form Patties: scoop mixture into 4 even sized patties, forming them and pressing flat with your hands.

In this article, we’ll delve into some valuable tips that will help you make the perfect All-American Chinese bean burger recipe.

Tip 1: Choose Your Beans Carefully

When making an All-American Chinese bean burger, it’s important to choose your beans carefully. That’s because the type of beans you use can significantly affect the texture and flavor of the burger. Some of the best beans to use are black beans, kidney beans, and chickpeas. These types of beans have a great texture and flavor and are also high in protein.

Tip 2: Use a Binder

When making any type of burger, a binder is essential because it helps keep the burger together. Some of the best binders to use when making an All-American Chinese bean burger include eggs, breadcrumbs, and flaxseed meal. Eggs are a great binder because they are high in protein, while breadcrumbs and flaxseed meal are both high in fiber.

Tip 3: Add Chinese Flavors

To make an All-American Chinese bean burger, you’ll need to add some Chinese flavors to the recipe. Some of the best ingredients to use include soy sauce, ginger, garlic, and sesame oil. Soy sauce provides a savory flavor that is synonymous with Chinese cuisine, while ginger and garlic add a unique taste and aroma to the burger. Sesame oil, on the other hand, provides a nutty flavor that is unique to Chinese cuisine.

Tip 4: Experiment with Different Vegetables

Vegetables are an essential ingredient when making any type of burger, including the All-American Chinese bean burger. Some of the best vegetables to use include onions, mushrooms, peppers, and carrots. However, you can also experiment with different vegetables like bok choy, water chestnuts, and bamboo shoots. These vegetables not only add a unique flavor but also provide different textures to the burger.

Tip 5: Consider the Condiments

The condiments you use can significantly affect the flavor of the All-American Chinese bean burger. To keep it authentic, it’s important to use Chinese condiments like hoisin sauce, sriracha, and Chinese five-spice. However, you can also experiment with different condiments like avocado sauce, chipotle mayo, or even ketchup.

Tip 6: Cook the Burger Properly

To ensure that the All-American Chinese bean burger is properly cooked, you’ll need to follow some cooking guidelines. Firstly, ensure that the burger is cooked all the way through to prevent any foodborne illnesses. Secondly, avoid pressing down on the burger while cooking because this will cause the juices to leak out, resulting in a dry burger. Lastly, do not overcrowd the pan while cooking because this will cause the burger to steam instead of sear, resulting in a mushy texture.

Tip 7: Serve the Burger Properly

Presentation is everything when it comes to food, and the All-American Chinese bean burger is no exception. To serve the burger properly, consider using a toasted bun and adding some toppings like lettuce, tomato, and cheese.
