Provided by Food Network Kitchen

Categories     main-dish

Time 45m

Yield 4 servings

Number Of Ingredients 12

Two 14-ounce packages extra-firm tofu
2 tablespoons olive oil
Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
1 pound green beans, trimmed
1/3 cup low-sodium soy sauce
2 tablespoons rice wine vinegar
2 tablespoons mirin
1 heaping tablespoon brown sugar
1 to 2 teaspoons chili-garlic paste or sambal (add amount to spice level preference)
1 teaspoon cornstarch
3 cloves garlic, smashed whole
2 scallions, thinly sliced

Steps:

  • Drain the tofu, wrap each block in several layers of paper towel and set on a large plate. Place a heavy pan on top (cast-iron works great for this) to press excess liquid from the tofu; allow to rest for 15 minutes.
  • Slice each tofu block into six 1/2-inch-thick slices. Drain the large plate of any excess liquid, wipe dry and place the tofu slices back on the plate. Put 1 tablespoon of the oil in a small bowl and use a pastry brush to coat both sides of the slices with the oil. Season both sides of the slices with 1 teaspoon salt and several grinds of pepper.
  • Preheat the air fryer to 400 degrees F.
  • Lay the tofu slices flat in the basket of the air fryer and cook, flipping halfway through, until lightly golden and crisp, about 20 minutes. Transfer to a plate.
  • Preheat the air fryer to 400 degrees F again.
  • Toss the green beans in a large bowl with the remaining 1 tablespoon oil, 1/2 teaspoon salt and several grinds of pepper. Cook the beans, tossing halfway through, until tender and blistered, about 10 minutes.
  • While the beans cook, combine the soy sauce, rice wine vinegar, mirin, brown sugar, chili-garlic paste, cornstarch, garlic and 3 tablespoons water in a small saucepan and stir until the cornstarch is dissolved. Cook over medium-low heat, stirring occasionally, until the sauce is slightly reduced, thickened and shiny, 5 to 7 minutes.
  • Transfer the beans to a large serving plate and shingle the tofu slices on top. Drizzle the sauce over the tofu and beans and garnish with the scallions.

Categories     Lunch

Time 50m

Yield 24 pieces

Number Of Ingredients 25

1 lb extra firm tofu
⅓ cup potato starch
½ teaspoon McCormick® ground ginger
2 teaspoons onion powder
1 teaspoon McCormick® Paprika
½ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
2 teaspoons garlic powder
1 teaspoon kosher salt
nonstick cooking spray, for greasing
¼ cup soy sauce
¼ cup brown sugar
1 ½ tablespoons lime juice
¼ teaspoon toasted sesame oil
1 tablespoon grated fresh ginger
3 tablespoons honey
1 ½ tablespoons sambal
1 tablespoon garlic, minced
2 teaspoons rice wine
¼ cup water, plus more as needed
2 teaspoons cornstarch
1 teaspoon scallion greens, sliced
½ teaspoon sesame seeds
1 lime, cut into wedges
steamed rice
vegetable, steamed

Steps:

  • Prepare the tofu: Line a baking sheet with paper towels.
  • Remove the tofu from the package and lay on the prepared baking sheet. Top with 2 more paper towels and another baking sheet and weigh down with a heavy pan or cast iron skillet. Press the tofu for 30-60 minutes to remove excess liquid before frying. This can be done up to 2 days ahead; store the pressed tofu in an airtight container until ready to use.
  • After pressing, transfer the tofu to a cutting board and cut into 1-inch cubes.
  • In a medium bowl, stir together the potato starch, ground ginger, onion powder, paprika, black pepper, garlic powder, and salt. Add the tofu cubes and toss until well coated on all sides.
  • Preheat the air fryer to 400°F (200°C). Spray the inside of the air fryer basket with nonstick spray.
  • Working in batches to avoid overcrowding, shake off the excess flour from each piece of tofu and place in the air fryer. Fry for 12 minutes, flipping halfway, until crispy. Transfer to a medium bowl while you repeat with the remaining tofu.
  • While the tofu fries, make the sauce: in a small saucepan, combine the soy sauce, brown sugar, lime juice, sesame oil, ginger, honey, sambal, garlic, and rice wine. Cook over medium heat until the sauce reduces and starts to thicken, 5-7 minutes.
  • In a small bowl, whisk together ¼ cup water and the cornstarch to make a slurry. Whisk the slurry into the sauce and cook for 2-3 minutes, until thickened. If the sauce becomes too thick, thin out with water as needed.
  • Pour the sauce over the tofu and toss until well coated. Save any remaining sauce for dipping if desired, or store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 1 week.
  • Arrange the tofu on a platter and top with the sesame seeds, scallions, and a squeeze of lime.
  • Serve over steamed rice with your favorite steamed vegetable, such as broccoli.
  • Enjoy!

I spiced it very lightly because the kids don't like a lot of spice, but feel free to increase and vary the spices.

Air fryer tofu recipes are a twist on one of the most popular meat alternatives in the world. Tofu, made from soybeans, is a healthy source of protein, low in fat and calories and contains all nine essential amino acids.

The Air Fryer

An air fryer is a kitchen appliance designed to cook food by circulating hot air around it. Compared to traditional frying methods, air fryer meals are generally considered healthier because they require little to no oil.

Advantages of Air Fryer Tofu Recipes

Air fryer tofu recipes are considered a healthier alternative to deep-fried tofu because they use little to no oil. This approach minimizes the fat content, thus reducing your overall calorie intake. Furthermore, air fryer tofu recipes are often textured and crispy, giving them an appealing crunch similar to deep-fried tofu. The air fryer method is also a time saver since it requires little to no supervision as it cooks.

Types of Air Fryer Tofu

There are different types of air fryer tofu recipes that you can try depending on your taste preferences. For instance, you can opt for marinated tofu, breaded tofu, or even plain tofu. Marinated tofu results in a flavorful and tender texture, and it is the best option for people who prefer savory dishes. Breaded tofu, on the other hand, is ideal for those who love a crunchy texture. Finally, plain tofu is for people who desire a simple yet nutritious meal.

Air fryer tofu recipes are becoming more popular due to the increasing demand for healthy and vegan-friendly dishes. Tofu, also known as "bean curd," is a versatile protein source that can be cooked in many ways. With an air fryer, it is possible to achieve crispy and flavorful tofu without using excessive oil. However, cooking with an air fryer requires some knowledge and tips to ensure that your tofu dishes turn out perfect. In this article, we will share valuable tips for making air fryer tofu recipes that are delicious and healthy.

Tip 1: Choose the right tofu

The key to making delicious air fryer tofu dishes is to choose the right type of tofu. There are two main types of tofu: firm and silken. Firm tofu is dense and holds its shape well, making it ideal for frying and grilling. On the other hand, silken tofu is soft and custard-like, making it ideal for blending in smoothies, soups, and sauces. When choosing firm tofu for air frying, it is essential to select extra-firm tofu. Extra-firm tofu has the lowest water content, which allows it to hold its shape better and absorb flavors. Therefore, it is the best type of tofu for air frying.

Tip 2: Press the tofu

One common mistake people make when cooking with tofu is not pressing it. Tofu comes in blocks that contain water that needs to be drained out before cooking. Pressing tofu removes the excess water and allows it to absorb more flavor and become crispier when cooked. To press tofu, wrap it in a clean kitchen towel or paper towel and place it on a plate. Put a weight on top of the tofu, such as a heavy pot or a can of beans, and let it sit for at least 15-30 minutes. You can also use a tofu press that makes the process faster and more efficient.

Tip 3: Marinate the tofu

Tofu on its own does not have much flavor, which is why it is essential to marinate it before air frying. Marinating tofu adds flavor, tenderizes it, and makes it more succulent. There are many marinade options you can use to flavor your tofu, such as soy sauce, maple syrup, garlic, ginger, and sesame oil. To marinate the tofu, cut it into small cubes or slices and put it in a shallow dish. Pour the marinade over the tofu, making sure it is well coated. Let the tofu marinate for at least 30 minutes, or overnight for more flavor.

Tip 4: Use cornstarch or flour

Using cornstarch or flour is a key step in making crispy tofu with an air fryer. Coating the tofu in cornstarch or flour creates a barrier that prevents it from sticking to the air fryer basket and provides a crispy texture. To coat the tofu, place it in a plastic bag with a few tablespoons of cornstarch or flour. Shake the bag to coat the tofu evenly. Remove the tofu from the bag and shake off any excess cornstarch or flour before placing it in the air fryer basket.

Tip 5: Preheat the air fryer

Preheating the air fryer is an essential step to achieve perfectly cooked tofu. Preheating the air fryer allows it to reach the desired temperature before adding the tofu, which helps the tofu cook evenly and become crispy. To preheat the air fryer, turn it on to the desired temperature and let it run for about 3-5 minutes. This allows the air fryer basket and heating element to heat up and reach the correct temperature before adding the tofu.

Tip 6: Don't overcrowd the air fryer basket

One common mistake when air frying tofu is to overcrowd the air fryer basket. Overcrowding the basket does not allow the hot air to circulate evenly, resulting in unevenly cooked tofu or soggy tofu. To avoid overcrowding the basket, place the tofu in a single layer, leaving some space between each cube or piece. If you have a lot of tofu to cook, it is better to cook it in batches, so the air fryer is not overcrowded.

Tip 7: Flip the tofu halfway through cooking

To achieve crispy and evenly cooked tofu, it is important to flip it halfway through cooking. Flipping the tofu allows it to cook evenly on both sides and prevents it from sticking to the basket. To flip the tofu, use tongs or a spatula to carefully turn each cube or piece over in the basket. Be gentle, so the tofu does not fall apart.

Tip 8: Experiment with different seasonings

One of the benefits of cooking with tofu is that it is a blank canvas that can be flavored in many ways. Experimenting with different seasonings is a great way to create new and exciting air fryer tofu dishes. You can use spices, herbs, sauces, and condiments to flavor the tofu, such as paprika, cumin, turmeric, chipotle, BBQ sauce, honey mustard, or sriracha.

Tip 9: Serve the tofu immediately

Tofu dishes are best served immediately after cooking. Tofu tends to lose its crispy texture and become soggy if left to sit for too long. To serve the tofu, transfer it to a plate or bowl, and add any toppings or garnishes. You can serve air fryer tofu as a side dish, a main course, or use it as a protein source in salads, wraps, or sandwiches.

Conclusion

Air fryer tofu recipes are a healthy and delicious way to incorporate more plant-based protein into your diet. With the tips mentioned above, you can make perfect air fryer tofu dishes that are crispy, flavorful, and nutritious. Remember to choose extra-firm tofu, press it, marinate it, coat it in cornstarch or flour, preheat the air fryer, flip the tofu halfway through cooking, experiment with different seasonings, and serve it immediately. Enjoy!
