Three ingredients and 10 minutes in your air fryer are what's needed to make these keto-friendly, bacon-wrapped jalapeno poppers. Try different flavors of cream cheese for variety! Thick-cut bacon does not work well, so use regular bacon. Halving the bacon lengthwise makes it easier to wrap around the peppers.

AIR FRYER JALAPEñO POPPERS

Air Fryer Jalapeño Poppers image

We have a high bar for jalapeño poppers, and this easy air-fryer version surpasses it. In our books the jalapeño itself needs to be cooked through but still sturdy enough to support all the filling. This recipe calls for large jalapeños, which fit more filling than smaller ones and tend to be sturdier. The molten cheese will not spill out of these poppers thanks to the way they are filled and rested for a few minutes in the air fryer after cooking. Finally, the breadcrumb coating remains crispy for a very long time because of the addition of crushed kettle potato chips.

Time 20m

Yield 8 servings (24 poppers)

Number Of Ingredients 7

12 large jalapeño peppers (at least 4 inches in length)
8 ounces cream cheese, at room temperature
5 ounces extra-sharp yellow Cheddar, grated
1/2 cup panko breadcrumbs seasoned with Pecorino Romano
1/2 cup finely crushed kettle potato chips
Nonstick cooking spray
2 tablespoons bacon bits or freshly cooked, crumbled bacon

Steps:

  • Working with disposable rubber gloves to protect your skin, halve each jalapeño lengthwise, slicing through the stem. Remove the seeds and white ribs with a spoon or small melon baller. Arrange the halves on a baking sheet rounded sides down. If any of the halves tilt sideways instead of standing straight up, slice a sliver of skin off the rounded side, making sure not to cut through to the cavity, so they sit level.
  • Add the cream cheese and Cheddar to a small bowl and mix together with a rubber spatula until combined. Stir together the breadcrumbs and potato chips in a medium bowl.
  • Divide the cream cheese mixture among the jalapeño halves, smoothing it down with your finger or the back of a butter knife so the filling is level with the top of the jalapeno, not mounded. (You may have extra filling depending on how large your jalapenos are.) Firmly press the breadcrumb mixture over the cream cheese to fully coat. Spray the breadcrumbs with nonstick spray.
  • Preheat the air fryer to 400 degrees F and set to cook for 4 minutes. Arrange the poppers in a single layer in the basket so they're not touching, working in batches if necessary. Air fry the poppers without opening the basket to check on them. When the air fryer turns off, let the poppers sit in the basket for another 4 minutes without opening the machine. (this will allow the poppers to cool slightly and the cheese to set so it doesn't slide out-don't worry, it'll still be gooey.)
  • Carefully open the air fryer basket and remove each popper with a spatula. Serve the poppers sprinkled with the bacon.

Choosing the Right Jalapeños

When making air fryer jalapeño poppers recipes, it's important to choose the right jalapeños. You want to look for green jalapeños that are smooth and firm to the touch. It's also a good idea to wear gloves when handling jalapeños to avoid getting any of the spicy oils on your skin.

Jalapeño poppers are a favorite appetizer and snack among many Americans. The bite-sized finger food packs a spicy punch and leaves you craving for more. The traditional method of making jalapeño poppers is deep-frying, but with the innovation of air fryers, this recipe has been transformed into a healthier version, calling for less oil consumption. However, making air fryer jalapeño poppers isn't as easy as tossing them in the air fryer basket and pressing the start button. There are specific steps and considerations to bear in mind to ensure that the jalapeño poppers come out perfectly crispy, gooey, and delicious. In this article, we will share some valuable tips on how to create the most delectable air fryer jalapeño poppers.

Tip #1: Choose the right jalapeños

The first tip to making the perfect air fryer jalapeño poppers begins with selecting the right jalapeños. You want to go for fresh, firm, and smooth peppers without any signs of wrinkles, blemishes, or soft spots. Additionally, ensure that the jalapeños are uniform in size to ensure even cooking. It's also essential to note that the level of heat differs from one pepper to another, and it's always advisable to taste a bit before proceeding to cook. You don't want to end up with jalapeño poppers that are too mild or overly spicy.

Tip #2: Prepping the jalapeños

Once you have the right jalapeños, it's time to prepare them for stuffing. To begin, cut off the stem of each jalapeño and slice them in half lengthwise. You can either leave the seeds and core intact or remove them, depending on the level of heat you desire. If you leave the seeds and core, the poppers will be spicier. It's important to note that jalapeño oil can be irritating to your skin, and we recommend wearing gloves when handling them.

Tip #3: Stuffing the jalapeños

The filling is the heart of the jalapeño poppers, and you can customize it to your preference. The primary components of the filling are cream cheese and shredded cheese. You can add other ingredients like garlic, onions, bacon bits, and herbs for additional flavor. We recommend using a piping bag or a ziplock bag with a corner snipped off to fill the jalapeños with the stuffing. This technique ensures that the filling is distributed evenly and neatly.

Tip #4: Breading the jalapeños

Breading the jalapeños is what creates the outer crispy layer. The most common breading consists of flour, eggs, and breadcrumbs. To ensure optimal crispiness, we recommend using Panko breadcrumbs instead of plain breadcrumbs. You can season the breadcrumbs with salt, black pepper, and paprika for added flavor. Dip each stuffed jalapeño in flour, then in beaten eggs, and finally in the breadcrumbs, ensuring that the coating is even.

Tip #5: Cooking time and temperature

The cooking time and temperature are crucial to the success of the air fryer jalapeño poppers. Preheat the air fryer to 400°F, and spray the jalapeño poppers lightly with cooking spray. Place the poppers in the air fryer basket, making sure that they're not touching each other. Cook the jalapeño poppers for 8-10 minutes or until they're golden brown and crispy, flipping them halfway through. It's important to note that cooking times may vary depending on the air fryer model, so keep an eye on them to prevent overcooking.

Tip #6: Presentation

Presentation adds to the overall appeal of the air fryer jalapeño poppers. After cooking, transfer the poppers to a serving platter and garnish them with chopped parsley or cilantro for freshness. You can also serve them with a dipping sauce like ranch, sour cream, or salsa for added flavor.

Conclusion

Air fryer jalapeño poppers are a healthier and more delicious alternative to the traditional deep-fried poppers. With the right jalapeños, stuffing, breading, and cooking technique, you can create the perfect poppers that will leave your guests satisfied and craving for more. Follow these valuable tips and wow your friends and family with your culinary skills.
