Air fryers are becoming increasingly popular in households across the United States because they allow for healthier cooking options without sacrificing taste. One of the many recipes that can be prepared in the air fryer is black bean chimichangas. In this article, we will provide valuable tips on how to make air fryer black bean chimichangas that are crispy, delicious, and healthy.

Tip 1: Choosing the Right Tortilla

The type of tortilla you choose is essential when making chimichangas. Flour tortillas are the most common types used for chimichangas, but corn tortillas can also be used for those looking for a gluten-free option. However, flour tortillas are the best option when making air fryer black bean chimichangas as they hold up better and do not crumble during air frying.
Tip 1a: Soften the Tortillas Before Filling
To make it easier to fill the tortillas, heat them slightly to make them pliable. This can be done by microwaving them for 10-15 seconds or lightly toasting them on a pan.

Tip 2: Preparing the Black Beans

Cooking black beans in advance saves time and ensures that they are properly seasoned. Canned black beans can be used, but they may not have as much flavor as the beans that are cooked from scratch.
Tip 2a: Season the Black Beans
To give the black beans a burst of flavor, add spices such as cumin, chili powder, and garlic powder. This will add depth and enhance the taste of the chimichangas.
Tip 2b: Drain the Black Beans
Beans that have excess liquid will result in a soggy chimichanga. Drain the black beans properly before adding them to the tortillas. A colander or sieve can be used to drain the beans effectively.

Tip 3: Proper Assembly of the Chimichangas

Proper assembly of the chimichangas is as important as the filling. Improperly rolled chimichangas may fall apart during the cooking process or become soggy.
Tip 3a: Add the Filling Carefully
Overfilling or underfilling the chimichangas can be problematic. Overfilling will make it hard to roll, and underfilling will result in a bland chimichanga. The filling should be placed on the lower third of the tortilla, leaving the top and bottom edges free.
Tip 3b: Follow Proper Roll Technique
When rolling the tortilla, fold the bottom edge up over the filling, tuck in the sides, and continue rolling until the top edge is reached. Tucking in the sides keeps the filling from spilling out, and the top edge is sealed by pressing lightly.

Tip 4: Brush the Chimichangas with Oil

Brushing the chimichangas with oil before air frying helps to achieve a crispy, golden-brown exterior.
Tip 4a: Use the Right Type of Oil
Use oil that has a high smoking point, such as vegetable oil, canola oil, or sunflower oil. Low smoke point oils are not suitable for air frying as they burn quickly and produce smoke.
Tip 4b: Brush the Chimichangas Lightly
Lightly brush the chimichangas with oil on both sides. Too much oil makes the chimichangas greasy, which can affect their texture.

Tip 5: Preheat the Air Fryer

Preheating the air fryer ensures that the chimichangas cook evenly and have a crispy exterior.
Tip 5a: Set the Temperature and Time
Set the air fryer to 400°F and preheat it for 3-5 minutes before adding the chimichangas. This will give the air fryer time to reach the desired temperature.
Tip 5b: Do Not Overcrowd the Air Fryer Basket
Overcrowding the air fryer basket can cause uneven cooking and may lead to soggy chimichangas. Leave space between the chimichangas to allow for air circulation.

Conclusion

Making air fryer black bean chimichangas requires careful attention to detail to achieve a crispy, flavorful result. By following the tips outlined in this article, you will be able to make a delicious and healthy version of this popular dish.
