THE BEST SLOPPY JOES

The Best Sloppy Joes image

This is weeknight comfort food at its finest. We created a homemade sauce that is tangy and flavorful but also quick and easy. We used both ketchup and canned tomato sauce for lots of tomato-y zip and just a touch of brown sugar for a bit of sweetness and slight caramel finish. Green bell pepper is a key addition; it really enhances the other ingredients, elevating the flavor profile into the realm of a true sloppy joe.

Time 30m

Yield 4 to 6 sandwiches

Number Of Ingredients 15

2 tablespoons unsalted butter
1 medium onion, diced
1 green bell pepper, diced
1 clove garlic, minced
1 pound lean ground beef
12 ounces (1 1/3 cup) tomato sauce
3/4 cup ketchup
2 tablespoons brown sugar
2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
1 tablespoon yellow mustard
1 tablespoon red wine vinegar
1 teaspoon paprika
Pinch of cayenne pepper
Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
6 hamburger buns, toasted

Steps:

  • Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the onions and peppers and cook, stirring occasionally, until softened and starting to caramelize in some spots, 6 to 7 minutes. Add the garlic and cook, stirring, until fragrant, about 1 minute. Stir in the beef and cook, breaking up the meat with a wooden spoon or spatula, until it is browned, no longer pink in the middle and cooked through, 7 to 8 minutes.
  • Stir in the tomato sauce, ketchup, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, red wine vinegar, paprika, cayenne pepper, 1 teaspoon salt and a generous amount of black pepper and simmer, stirring occasionally, until thickened and heated through, 5 to 6 minutes. Spoon the meat onto the toasted buns.

A Different Kind of Sloppy Joe Recipe

When it comes to quick and easy meals, sloppy joes are a classic go-to. The traditional recipe typically consists of ground beef, tomato sauce, and a handful of spices, all cooked together and piled high on a hamburger bun. However, there are plenty of delicious variations on this classic dish, each offering its own unique flavor and texture.
Vegetarian Sloppy Joes
For those who follow a vegetarian or vegan diet, meatless sloppy joes can be a satisfying alternative. Instead of beef, these recipes often use lentils, mushrooms, or another protein-packed vegetable as the base. They're just as hearty and filling as the original recipe, and often include additional veggies like bell peppers or zucchini for extra nutrition.
Mexican-Style Sloppy Joes
If you're in the mood for something spicy and flavorful, consider a Mexican-inspired take on the classic sloppy joe. These recipes often use ground beef or turkey, but with the addition of tomato sauce, cumin, chili powder, and other southwestern spices. They're typically served on a toasted bun and topped with shredded cheese, diced onions, or fresh cilantro.
BBQ Sloppy Joes
For those who love the smoky, savory flavor of barbecue sauce, try this twist on the traditional sloppy joe. Instead of tomato sauce, use your favorite BBQ sauce as the base, and add cooked ground beef or pork for a more assertive flavor. Additional ingredients might include onion, garlic, Worcestershire sauce, or brown sugar, depending on the recipe.
Greek-Style Sloppy Joes
If you're looking for a healthier spin on the classic dish, consider a Greek-inspired version. Instead of ground beef, this recipe calls for ground lamb, which is cooked with garlic, onion, tomato paste, and a range of Mediterranean spices. The sloppy joe filling is typically served on a whole grain pita or Greek-style flatbread, and topped with fresh cucumber, tomato, and feta cheese.
Italian-Style Sloppy Joes
If you're in the mood for a rich, hearty flavor, try an Italian-inspired variation on the classic sloppy joe. This recipe might include ingredients like Italian sausage, roasted red peppers, and garlic, as well as tomato sauce and a range of Italian spices like basil, oregano, and thyme. Serve on a toasted bun or ciabatta roll, with a side of garlic bread or a salad.
Seafood Sloppy Joes
For those who love seafood, a seafood-inspired sloppy joe can be a tasty and unique twist on the classic dish. This recipe might include ingredients like shrimp, crab, or lobster, along with tomato sauce, garlic, and other spices. It's typically served on a toasted bun and topped with fresh herbs or a squeeze of lemon juice. In conclusion, there are many different ways to enjoy sloppy joes beyond the traditional recipe. From vegetarian versions to spicy Mexican-style options, there's a recipe out there for every taste preference. So next time you're in the mood for a quick and satisfying meal, why not try one of these delicious variations on the classic sloppy joe?
