TRADITIONAL GREEK SALAD RECIPE

Traditional Greek Salad Recipe image

Simple traditional Greek Salad with ripe tomatoes, cucumbers, bell peppers, onions, olives and creamy feta cheese.

Provided by Suzy Karadsheh

Categories     Salad

Time 15m

Number Of Ingredients 10

1 medium red onion
4 Medium juicy tomatoes
1 English cucumber (hot house cucumber) (partially peeled making a striped pattern)
1 green bell pepper (cored)
Greek pitted Kalamata olives (a handful to your liking)
kosher salt (a pinch)
4 tbsp quality extra virgin olive oil
1-2 tbsp red wine vinegar
Blocks of Greek feta cheese (do not crumble the feta, leave it in large pieces)
1/2 tbsp dried oregano

Steps:

  • Cut the red onion in half and thinly slice into half moons. (If you want to take the edge off, place the sliced onions in a solution of iced water and vinegar for a bit before adding to the salad. I do this in the video).
  • Cut the tomatoes into wedges or large chunks (I sliced some into rounds and cut the rest in wedges).
  • Cut the partially peeled cucumber in half length-wise, then slice into thick halves (at least 1/2" in thickness)
  • Thinly slice the bell pepper into rings.
  • Place everything in a large salad dish. Add a good handful of pitted kalamata olives.
  • Season very lightly with kosher salt (just a pinch) and a bit of dried oregano.
  • Pour the olive oil and red wine vinegar all over the salad. Give everything a very gentle toss to mix (do NOT over mix, this salad is not meant to be handled too much).
  • Now add the the feta blocks on top and add a sprinkle more of dried oregano.
  • Serve with crusty bread.

A Different Greek Salad

Greek Salad is a classic summer favorite. It is commonly made with sliced cucumbers, tomato wedges, red onion, and feta cheese. It is then tossed in a simple vinaigrette made up of lemon juice, olive oil, garlic, and oregano. However, there are countless variations of the classic Greek Salad, and each one offers its own unique spin on the traditional dish.

Adding Protein

If you're looking to make your Greek salad more filling and substantial, consider adding some protein. Grilled chicken or shrimp are both popular choices, but you could also opt for thinly sliced steak, grilled tofu, or even chickpeas for a vegetarian option. Adding protein will not only make your salad more satisfying, but it will also provide you with a boost of energy to power you through the day.

Playing with Texture

One way to make your Greek Salad stand out is by playing with texture. Instead of slicing your vegetables into uniform pieces, try cutting them in various sizes and shapes. For example, you could slice your cucumber into thin rounds, dice your tomatoes into small cubes, and shave your red onion into thin strips. This will create a more interesting texture in your salad, and each bite will be slightly different from the previous.

Exploring Different Cheeses

Feta cheese is the classic choice for a Greek Salad, but there are other cheeses that can work just as well. Goat cheese, ricotta salata, and halloumi are all popular choices that add a distinct flavor to the salad. If you want to try something different, consider using a more pungent cheese like gorgonzola or roquefort.

Experimenting with Dressings

The classic dressing for a Greek Salad is a simple combination of lemon juice, olive oil, garlic, and oregano. However, there are countless other dressings you can use that will work just as well. A creamy tzatziki dressing made with yogurt, cucumber, and garlic is a popular choice, as is a tangy vinaigrette made with red wine vinegar and Dijon mustard. You could also try a spicy harissa dressing or a sweet honey mustard dressing.

Adding Fruit

Fruit is not a traditional ingredient in a Greek Salad, but adding it can provide a burst of sweetness and color to the dish. Sliced strawberries, pomegranate seeds, and diced mango are all great options that pair well with the other flavors in the salad. Just make sure that the fruit you choose is ripe and sweet so that it complements the other ingredients in the dish.

Using Different Greens

Romaine lettuce is often the base for a Greek Salad, but there are other greens you can use that will add more flavor and texture. Arugula, baby spinach, and mixed greens are all great options that provide a peppery kick to the dish. You could also try substituting the lettuce altogether and using kale or cabbage for a heartier salad.

Adding Nuts and Seeds

Nuts and seeds are a great way to add crunch and flavor to a Greek Salad. Toasted pine nuts, chopped almonds, and sesame seeds are all good options that pair well with the flavors in the dish. You could also try adding sunflower seeds or pumpkin seeds for a nutty flavor and a pop of color.

There are countless ways to make a Greek Salad, and experimenting with different ingredients is half the fun. Whether you're looking to add protein, texture, or flavor, there are endless possibilities for making this classic dish your own.

Greek salad is a delicious and refreshing dish that has been enjoyed for centuries. The traditional Greek salad recipe typically includes feta cheese, olives, cucumbers, tomatoes, onions, and a simple dressing of olive oil and lemon juice. In this article, we will share valuable tips and tricks for creating a delicious and unique Greek salad that is sure to become a crowd-pleaser. 1. Experiment with Different Greens Although the traditional Greek salad typically includes romaine lettuce as the base, you can mix things up by using different types of greens. Arugula, spinach, kale, and mixed greens all make great alternatives to romaine lettuce. Not only do these greens provide different textures and flavors, but they also add a healthy boost of nutrients to your salad. 2. Add Some Protein If you are looking to make your Greek salad more filling and satisfying, consider adding some protein. Grilled chicken, shrimp, tofu, or chickpeas are all great options for adding protein to your salad. You can also add sliced hard-boiled eggs for an extra boost of protein. 3. Incorporate New Vegetables While the traditional Greek salad includes cucumbers, tomatoes, and onions, you can mix things up by incorporating new vegetables into your salad. Roasted red peppers, artichoke hearts, beets, or roasted eggplant can add new flavors and textures to your salad. You can also try adding fresh herbs like cilantro, basil, or parsley for an extra burst of flavor. 4. Mix Up the Cheese While feta cheese is the classic choice for Greek salad, you can switch things up by using other types of cheese. Goat cheese, blue cheese, or Parmesan cheese are all great options for adding a different flavor profile to your salad. You can also use different types of feta cheese, such as Bulgarian or French, to add a unique twist to your salad. 5. Try Different Dressings While the traditional Greek salad dressing is olive oil and lemon juice, there are many other dressings that can work with a Greek salad. Balsamic vinaigrette, red wine vinegar, or honey mustard dressing can all work well with a Greek-inspired salad. You can also make your own dressing by mixing olive oil, lemon juice, and other seasonings like garlic, oregano, or basil. 6. Add Some Crunch Adding some crunch to your Greek salad can make it more interesting and enjoyable to eat. Try adding some croutons or chopped nuts like almonds, walnuts, or pecans. You can also add some crispy bacon, pancetta, or prosciutto for a savory crunch. 7. Make It Spicy If you like a little heat, consider adding some spice to your Greek salad. You can add sliced jalapeños or serrano peppers for a punch of spice, or sprinkle some red chili flakes on top. You can also add some hot sauce or chipotle dressing for an extra bit of heat. 8. Switch Up the Fruit While the traditional Greek salad does not include fruit, adding some fresh fruit can be a delicious addition to your salad. Sliced peaches, strawberries, or grapes can add a sweet and juicy flavor to your salad. You can also add some dried fruit, like raisins or cranberries, for a different texture and flavor. 9. Incorporate Some Grains If you want to make your Greek salad more filling, consider adding some grains. Quinoa, bulgur, or barley are all great options for adding some texture and nutrients to your salad. You can also add some pita chips or naan bread for a more substantial meal. 10. Create a Themed Greek Salad Finally, you can get creative and create a themed Greek salad based on a specific cuisine or flavor profile. For example, you can make a Mexican-inspired Greek salad by adding black beans, corn, and avocado, and topping it with a cilantro lime dressing. Or, you can make a Mediterranean-inspired Greek salad by adding roasted red peppers, sun-dried tomatoes, artichoke hearts, and a lemon garlic dressing. The possibilities are endless! In conclusion, there are many valuable tips and tricks for making a unique and delicious Greek salad.
