This is my Mom's recipe. Its a cross between a cake and a fudgy brownie. Simular to Texas Sheet cake. I have fond memories of having this cake on Sundays.

Number Of Ingredients 17

2 cups flour
2 cups sugar
1/2 cup butter
1 cup water
1/2 cup shortening
1/4 teaspoon salt
4 tablespoons cocoa
1/2 cup buttermilk
2 eggs
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 cup butter
4 tablespoons cocoa
1/3 cup milk
1 lb powdered sugar
1 cup chopped nuts

Steps:

  • Do not use a mixer.
  • Combine flour and sugar in a large bowl.
  • In saucepan combine butter, water, shortening, cocoa and salt.
  • Bring to a boil.
  • Pour over flour mixture.
  • Combine buttermilk, eggs, soda, vanilla and cinnamon.
  • Add to the other mixture and mix all together (will be a little lumpy).
  • Pour batter into a 9 x 12 greased pan.
  • Bake 22 minutes at 400 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • When cake has baked 18 minutes, start combining in large bowl the 1/2 cup butter, 4 Tablespoons cocoa, and 1/3 cup milk.
  • Bring to a boil and while boiling stir in 1 pound powdered sugar and 1 cup chopped nuts. Do not remove from heat while stirring in sugar.
  • Pour over hot cake as soon as it is removed from oven.

1 cup butter, softened
3 cups packed brown sugar
4 large eggs, room temperature
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
2-2/3 cups all-purpose flour
3/4 cup baking cocoa
3 teaspoons baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1-1/3 cups sour cream
1-1/3 cups boiling water
FROSTING:
1/2 cup butter, cubed
3 ounces unsweetened chocolate, chopped
3 ounces semisweet chocolate, chopped
5 cups confectioners' sugar
1 cup sour cream
2 teaspoons vanilla extract

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350°. Grease and flour three 9-in. round baking pans., In a large bowl, cream butter and brown sugar until light and fluffy, 5-7 minutes. Add eggs, 1 at a time, beating well after each addition. Beat in vanilla. In another bowl, whisk flour, cocoa, baking soda and salt; add to creamed mixture alternately with sour cream, beating well after each addition. Stir in water until blended., Transfer to prepared pans. Bake until a toothpick comes out clean, 30-35 minutes. Cool in pans 10 minutes; remove to wire racks to cool completely., For frosting, in a metal bowl over simmering water, melt butter and chocolates; stir until smooth. Cool slightly., In a large bowl, combine confectioners' sugar, sour cream and vanilla. Add chocolate mixture; beat until smooth. Spread frosting between layers and over top and sides of cake. Refrigerate leftovers.

Cake:
2 cups all-purpose flour
2 cups sugar
1 stick margarine, softened
1 cup water
1/2 cup shortening
3 1/2 tablespoons cocoa
1/2 cup buttermilk
2 eggs
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 teaspoon of instant coffee

Icing:
1 stick margarine
3 1/2 tablespoons cocoa
1/3 cup milk
1 pound powdered sugar
1 cup chopped pecans
1 tablespoon instant coffee

Steps:

  • Cake: Do not use mixer. Combine flour and sugar in large bowl. In a saucepan, combine and bring to a boil the margarine, water, shortening, and cocoa; pour over flour and sugar mixture. Combine buttermilk, eggs, baking soda, vanilla, and coffee and add to the mixture; mix all together. Pour into a greased 12x7-inch pan and bake 20 minutes at 400°. Icing: When cake has baked for 18 minutes, combine in saucepan the margarine, cocoa, and milk. Bring to a boil. Add the powdered sugar, nuts, and coffee. Pour over cake when removed from oven.
