This hearty, crowd-pleasing dish is a comforting meal on a chilly night with bread and a salad. It also makes a delicious side dish. It doesn't take long to make but tastes like it simmered all day. -Jolene Lopez, Wichita, Kansas

WESTERN BEANS
I've made these zesty beans many times for picnics and potlucks-they're hearty and zippy with chili pepper and the extra flavor of lentils in the ban mix. The recipe can be made ahead and heated before serving. -Arthur Morris, Washington, Pennsylvania

BEST WESTERN BEANS
Great doctored baked bean recipe. Found this in an old hand-made school recipe booklet. Always requested at cookouts. Great the first day, better the second. Use only the molasses based beans not the ketchup style.

WESTERN-STYLE BAKED BEANS
My husband does not like baked beans but can't get enough of these. They are loaded with a variety of meats and get a little bit of sweetness from molasses and brown sugar. If you don't have a slow cooker, you can bake them in the oven until heated through.
