Sweet and tangy, this homemade sweet and sour sauce is ready in less than 10 minutes. Just 6 ingredients - add to the pan and simmer. Done!

2 garlic cloves (peeled and minced)
1 tsp minced ginger
2 tbsp malt vinegar
150 ml (2/3 cup) tomato ketchup
6 tbsp light brown muscavado sugar
180 ml (3/4 cup) pineapple juice (fresh, from a carton or from a tin of pineapple in juice)

Steps:

  • Add all of the ingredients to a small saucepan and stir together.
  • Heat over a medium-high heat. Bring to the boil and simmer for 5 minutes until slightly thickened.
  • Turn off the heat and pour into a serving bowl. Serve hot, warm or cold.

1/2 cup packed brown sugar
4 tablespoons cornstarch
1 (16 ounce) can pineapple tidbits, drained (reserve liquid)
1/2 cup vinegar
4 tablespoons catsup

Steps:

  • In 2 quart saucepan, mix sugar and starch.
  • Add enough water to pineapple liquid to make 2 cups.
  • Stir juice mixture, vinegar,& catsup into starch mixture.
  • Cook stirring constantly, until mixture thickens and boils.
  • Stir in pineapple.
  • Keep warm over very low heat.

1 green onion, with top
1 tablespoon cornstarch
2 tablespoons rice vinegar
3/4 cup water
1/4 cup brown sugar
1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes
2 tablespoons finely grated turnips

Steps:

  • Finely chop white part of green onion.
  • Cut the green top into thin 1-inch strips for garnish.
  • Combine cornstarch and vinegar in a small bowl, mixing well; set aside.
  • Combine water, brown sugar, red pepper flakes and chopped green onion in a small saucepan; bring to boil.
  • Stir in cornstarch mixture; return to boil and cook for 1 minute or until sauce is clear and thickened. Cool.
  • Sprinkle with turnip and reserved green onion strips just before serving.

2 cups water
1 ½ cups white sugar
1 cup ketchup
1 (8 ounce) can pineapple tidbits, undrained
⅔ cup distilled white vinegar
1 teaspoon red pepper flakes
1 tablespoon soy sauce
½ tablespoon steak sauce
½ tablespoon cayenne pepper hot sauce
3 tablespoons cornstarch

Steps:

  • Stir water, sugar, ketchup, pineapple, vinegar, red pepper flakes, soy sauce, steak sauce, and hot sauce together in a saucepan over medium heat. Remove 1/2 cup of the sauce to a small bowl; whisk cornstarch into the sauce in the bowl. Bring the sauce in the saucepan to a boil, stir the sauce with the cornstarch into the boiling sauce. Cook, stirring occasionally, until thickened, about 15 minutes. Remove from heat and allow to cool slightly before using.
