My mother-in-law has made this for years and everyone always loves it. Simple to make and very flexible. Let it burn a little on top, that's the good part!

8 potatoes, cut into 1/8-inch slices
cooking spray
3 cups milk
16 slices American cheese
¼ cup butter
¼ cup all-purpose flour
1 (16 ounce) jar cheese sauce (such as Ragu® Double Cheddar)

Steps:

  • Place potato slices in a bowl of water while preparing remaining ingredients.
  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Spray a 9x13-inch baking dish with cooking spray.
  • Melt butter in a saucepan over medium heat; cook and stir flour in melted butter for 2 to 3 minutes. Stir in milk until thickened, 4 to 5 minutes more. Add American cheese, mixing until melted. Pour in jarred cheese sauce and cook and stir until smooth.
  • Spread about 1/2 cup sauce in the bottom of the prepared baking dish. Layer potatoes slices in baking dish, alternating with cheese sauce.
  • Bake in preheated oven until potatoes are tender, about 90 minutes.

1 c milk
1 c heavy cream
1/4 c butter (not margarine)
2 tsp onion powder
1 tsp salt
6 medium potatoes, thinly sliced
1 1/2 Tbsp all-purpose flour
4 c shredded cheddar cheese

Steps:

  • 1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees.
  • 2. Combine milk, cream, butter, onion powder, and salt in medium saucepan.
  • 3. When butter melts add flour.
  • 4. Then add 2 cups shredded cheese and whisk until smooth.
  • 5. Place potatoes in prepared baking dish.
  • 6. Pour cheese sauce over potatoes.
  • 7. Cover with foil. Bake for 45 minutes.
  • 8. Uncover and add remaining cheese.
  • 9. Return to oven and bake uncovered until golden and bubbly.
