POTATO MOUSSAKA
My father was full blood Serbian. My father was a very good cook, although I never got to know him well. I remember him cooking chicken paprikash for me as a little girl. I just recently decided to check out some Serbian recipes since this is my heritage and try them. I never knew there was even such a thing as Serbian cooking...

Steps:
- 1. In a fry pan add the onions and garlic in olive oil and cook till the onions are limp. Add the ground beef, salt and pepper. Continue to cook through until meat is browned. Remove from stove and set aside.
- 2. Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Coat the bottom of a 13X9 casserole dish with olive oil. Cover the bottom with two layers of the sliced potatoes. Sprinkle with salt and pepper. (This does need alot of salt and pepper)
- 3. Spoon on the meat mixture over the potatoes. Add another double layer of the potatoe slices. (do not use more than 4 pds of potatoes total)
- 4. Sauce: Mix together the eggs, sourcream, milk, salt and pepper. Pour the sauce over the top of the casserole, stopping just before it covers the top layer, you want the top to brown nicely. Bake 1 hour or until potatoes are tender. Let cool down a few minutes and then serve. *** I served this with a corn casserole and a green salad and bread.
SERBIAN GROUND BEEF, VEGGIE, AND POTATO BAKE
My boyfriend lived in Serbia for 3 years and always begs me to recreate some of his favorite dishes. Based on his sketchy explanations and a little research into Eastern European spices, I concocted this hearty and slightly spicy bake with ground beef, paprika, and vegetables like celery and peppers. Great with a glass of red wine!

Steps:
- Preheat oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C). Lightly grease a casserole dish.
- In a skillet over medium heat, cook the beef until evenly brown. Remove beef from skillet, reserving juices, and set aside. Mix in the olive oil, and saute the green pepper, onion, carrot, and celery until tender.
- Return beef to the skillet, and season with paprika, salt, black pepper, red pepper, cinnamon, and cloves. Stir in the water and red wine until heated through. Dissolve the beef bouillon cube into the mixture. Remove skillet from heat, and mix in the half-and-half.
- Layer the bottom of the prepared casserole dish with enough potato slices to cover. Place the beef and vegetable mixture over the potatoes, and top with remaining potatoes.
- Cook, covered, 45 minutes in the preheated oven, or until the potatoes are tender.

SERBIAN POTATO SALAD
A potato salad Serbian style. It is an oil and vinegar based salad rather than the creamy style more common in North America. Cooking time doesn't include the chilling time because it is up to you how long you want to chill it.
