SCREAMING GREENIE

Screaming Greenie image

Redemption has arrived for the frozen drink, which in the late 20th century all but ruined the reputation of the daiquiri and margarita as serious cocktails. Absinthe provides a note of anise to this refreshing, verdant beverage. Just don't drink it too quickly - brain freeze is a real thing.

Yield 1 drink

Number Of Ingredients 7

1 cup sugar
2 ounces vodka
1/2 ounce absinthe
1/2 ounce fresh lemon juice
1 cup ice
9 leaves fresh Italian basil
Lemon wheel

Steps:

  • Make a simple syrup: Over medium burner, add the sugar to 1 cup of water and heat, stirring until sugar is dissolved. Cool. (Unused syrup can be refrigerated for 2 weeks.)
  • In a blender, mix 1 3/4 ounces of the syrup with the vodka, absinthe, lemon juice, ice and 8 basil leaves until smooth. Pour into tall glass. Garnish with remaining basil leaf and lemon wheel.

VODKA: COSMOPOLITAN

Vodka: Cosmopolitan image

A little more dressy than the working-class vodka cranberry. The cosmopolitan is just that, a little sip of sophistication (and a throw-back to the "Sex and the City" girls).

GRIEßBREI (GERMAN SEMOLINA PUDDING)

Grießbrei (German Semolina Pudding) image

This is a typical German dessert that I ate very often as a child. It is made from semolina and quite similar to pudding, only grainier. It is often eaten plain or with some cinnamon-sugar sprinkled on top. Another popular way of eating it is topped with berry compote. I hope youll enjoy this as much as we do! :)

Time 12m

Yield 2 bowls

Number Of Ingredients 4

350 ml milk (low-fat is fine)
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 tablespoons sugar (splenda is fine as well, can use more)
40 g semolina (I use whole spelt semolina)

Steps:

  • In a saucepan mix milk, sugar and vanilla.
  • Bring milk to a boil being careful not to burn it. Reduce heat to medium.
  • Using a wire whisk stir in semolina and simmer for 5 minutes until semolina has thickened lightly.
  • Remove from heat, fill into serving bowls and allow to chill until completely set. You can also eat this lukewarm, when it is still creamy.
  • Serve with compote of your choice, cream or cinnamon-sugar.

PATTI'S SCREAMIN' MEAN GREENS

Patti's Screamin' Mean Greens image

With a few tweaks to the recipe of the infamous and incomparable Ms. Patti Labelle, I can now make greens my young children love to eat!

Provided by Snootyvixen

Categories     Collard Greens

Time 45m

Yield 4-6 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 10

1 lb collard greens
1 lb kale
1 lb turnip greens
1 lb mustard greens
2 medium onions, chopped
1/4 cup vegetable oil
1 1/2 lbs turkey wings, smoked
salt, seasoned
fresh ground black pepper
2 jalapenos, seeded and chopped (optional)

Steps:

  • Fill your kitchen sink with water and wash the greens well. As you lift the greens from the sink, any grit will fall to the bottom. Repeat if necessary.
  • Tear the greens into large pieces, and remove and discard tough stems. Place greens in a large bowl - do NOT drain in a colander.
  • In a large pot, combine the onions, 2 cups water, oil, and jalapenos (if using). Bring to the boil over high heat.
  • Gradually stir in the greens, letting one batch wilt before you add the next. Bury the turkey wing in the greens. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  • Cover the pot and reduce the heat to medium-low. Cook until the greens are tender, about 30 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  • Remove the turkey wing, discard the skin and bones. Chop the turkey meat and return to the pot.
  • Use a slotted spoon to transfer the greens to a serving dish. Serve hot.
