West Virginia Hot Dog Sauce image

In West Virginia, we don't put "chili" on our hot dogs, we put "sauce"on them. This is a pretty basic recipe that can be doctored to your personal taste. =^..^=

Number Of Ingredients 4

1 pound(s) ground beef
1 medium onion, chopped
29 ounce(s) tomato sauce
2 tablespoon(s) chili powder, to start

Steps:

  • Brown ground beef & onion together, chopping meat into small pieces. Drain & return to skillet.
  • Add tomato sauce & chili powder. Simmer over med-low heat, stirring often, until sauce is desired consistency. Taste & add more chili powder, if needed. Stir well.
  • Variations: For the meat, use ground venison, veggie burger, ground turkey, etc... Chopped green pepper can be added with the onion. Some folks like a splash of tabasco or hot sauce.
  • Serve sauce over hot dog in a bun. In West Virginia, traditionally, hot dogs come with sauce, mustard, and (chopped raw) onions OR sauce & slaw. But make yourself happy with your own combinations!
