SUN-MAID-RAISIN NUT CAKE 1935 a back of box recipe image

Here is another very old, 3-layer tried and true cake recipe from the Depression Years! I happened upon this recipe in a shoe box full of grandmas Recipes! I do remember grandma called it her "ANT CAKE".....as children we screamed with delight ... while eating the ants! AW....memories! My granny was an awesome cook and...

2/3 c butter
1 c brown sugar.......( or 1/2 cup sugar)
1/2 c molasses............(light or dark)
2 eggs.....beaten
1 c sour milk............(or butter milk)
1 tsp baking soda
2-1/2 c flour
2 tsp baking powder
1-1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
1/2 tsp ground cloves
1/2 c walnuts..............(coarsely chopped)
1-1/2 c sun-maid raisins.........(cut in pieces)

Steps:

  • 1. Cream butter with brown sugar, then add molasses, beaten eggs and sour milk which the baking soda has been dissolved in.
  • 2. mix and sift the flour, baking powder, cinnamon and cloves. Add to this dry mixture, the raisins (cut in pieces) and the walnuts (coarsely chopped). Then combine these dry ingredients with the first mixture.
  • 3. Bake in three (greased and floured layer cake pans. Use square or round cake pans. Bake in a moderate 375 oven. for 25 minutes. Cover (cooled layers) generously with your favorite vanilla icing,or see note below. Then stack the layers..... Grandma never frosted the sides!...... Serve and enjoy.
  • 4. ** NOTE: Re FROSTING: You might take a look at look at, SANDY JONES-"A BLUE RIBBON" Frosting recipe..on "BANANA CAKE with BUTTERCREAM FROSTING" on JAP. It is her family 100 year old frosting recipe. I have used it...and it is delicious!!! No powdered sugar !
