SOS is a family staple. Easy, and it can be as simple or as fancy as you want it to be!

Number Of Ingredients 11

1 pound(s) lean ground beef, 93/7
1 small onion, diced
2 stick(s) celery, diced
2 dash(es) nutmeg
1 teaspoon(s) smoked black pepper
1 teaspoon(s) sea salt
1/4 teaspoon(s) red pepper flakes
1 teaspoon(s) creole seasoning
1/4 cup(s) all purpose flour
2 tablespoon(s) vegetable oil
2 cup(s) 2% milk

Steps:

  • Place ground beef, onions and celery in a skillet. Crumble to beef and sprinkle with the nutmeg, pepper, sea salt, red pepper flakes, and Creole seasoning. Brown beef over medium heat, crumbling it into very small pieces. When the beef is down, the veggies are done too.
  • Push the beef and veggies to one side of the pan. Put the vegetable oil in the empty part of the pan and add the flour. Stir it well and cook it until it bubbles, and you can smell it. Do not let it darken.
  • Stir in the milk slowly, making sure to break up any lumps. When all of the lumps are gone and the milk has been added, stir the beef into the milk and flour mixture.
  • Stirring constantly, let it simmer until it thickens, tasting to see if the raw flour taste is gone. If it is thickening too fast, remove from heat, and stir, and turn the heat down. It should take about 5 minutes.
  • Taste for salt and adjust as needed. Serve over mashed potatoes, biscuits, toast, slices of sourdough bread, etc.
