Simple Chocolate Buttercream Frosting image

A simple recipe for chocolate buttercream frosting that you can't get wrong that tastes great on yellow cake, brownies, or straight from the bowl! Using 1/2 baking cocoa and 1/2 milk chocolate chips provides the perfect chocolate flavoring.

½ cup milk chocolate chips, or more to taste
3 ½ cups powdered sugar
1 ¼ cups cold unsalted butter, cut into chunks
2 tablespoons heavy cream
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder, or more to taste

Steps:

  • Melt chocolate chips in a microwave-safe glass or ceramic bowl in 15-second intervals, stirring after each interval, 1 to 3 minutes.
  • Combine powdered sugar, butter, cream, and vanilla extract in a mixing bowl. Mix with an electric mixer on medium speed for 2 minutes. Add cocoa and melted chocolate chips; mix until creamy.
  • Place in the refrigerator for 10 minutes before using.
