Russian Sweet and Sour Cabbage image

5 tablespoon(s) butter
4 cup(s) onions, thinly sliced
2/3 cup(s) red wine vinegar
1/2 cup(s) applesauce
2 tablespoon(s) sugar
2 teaspoon(s) salt
1 teaspoon(s) ground black pepper
1 - bay leaf
1/8 teaspoon(s) ground cloves
1 - red cabbage (about 2 pounds)
1 - apple, golden delicious, peeled, cored, sliced thin
1/2 cup(s) apple juice

Steps:

  • Melt butter in heavy pan over medium low heat. Saute onions until soft. Add next 7 ingredients, heat to almost boiling.
  • Add cabbage, stir until cabbage starts to wilt. Cover and cook, stirring occasionally, until cabbage is crisp-tender, 17 minutes. Add apple and cook 5 more minutes.
