Red Velvet Cake (NYT) image

Number Of Ingredients 11

1/2 cup Butter
3 tablespoons Cocoa Powder
1 1/2 cups Sugar
2 Eggs
2 teaspoons Vanilla
2 tablespoons Red Food Coloring
1 teaspoon Salt
1 teaspoon Baking Soda
2 1/2 cups Flour
1 cup Buttermilk/Lactaid w/ 1tbps lemon juice
1 tablespoon Vinegar

Steps:

  • Heat oven to 350 degrees. Prepare 2 round cake pans with butter and dusting of cocoa powder.
  • Cream butter and sugar together. Add eggs one at a time and beat vigorously until each is incorporated. Mix in vanilla
  • In a separate bowl, make a paste of the 2TBSP Cocoa and the food coloring. Blend into butter mixture.
  • Combine dry ingredients (sift). Alternating with the buttermilk, add to the batter. In the last batch of buttermilk, add the vinegar then add to the batter. Mix until blended.
  • Divide among the cake pans (can be made into 3 pans as well). Bake 25min. Cool completely on rack.
