Poppy Seed Braid image

This was one of our favorite treats growing up. My mom was an excellent cook, and her baked goods couldn't be beat. But when she made this one, we were waiting in the kitchen for it to come out of the oven!

Number Of Ingredients 9

5-6 cup(s) unsifted flour
1/2 cup(s) sugar
1 1/4 teaspoon(s) salt
2 package(s) active dry yeast
3/4 cup(s) milk
1/2 cup(s) water
1/2 cup(s) butter
3 - eggs
1 can(s) solo poppy seed filling

Steps:

  • Mix 2 cups of flour, 1/2 cup sugar, salt and yeast. Heat milk, water, and butter in a saucepan with warm. Add to dry ingredients; beat a couple of minutes. Add eggs and 1/2 cup flour. Beat a couple of minutes. Stir in enough flour to make a soft dough. Knead on a floured area until smooth and elastic, about 8 minutes. Place in a lightly oiled bowl, turning to grease top. Cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled, about 45 minutes.
  • Divide dough into 2 equal portions. Roll out each one to about 9" x 5" rectangle. Spread filling in the middle. With scissors, cut dough on long edge about 1" x 3". Criss cross over filling pinching down ends to hold. (Or can spread filling on dough and roll from long side.)
  • Allow to rise again, about 15 minutes. Bake in a 350 oven for about 30 minutes or until golden brown.
