Nonnies Date Nut Bread image

This is my Mom's recipe and I just love it. Anything with dates is good. This is an old recipe. I can't remember when Mom didn't make it. The recipe has been around a long time.My parents were married almost 70 years, and she made it all through their marriage.

Number Of Ingredients 11

1 cup(s) dates-cut up
1 1/2 cup(s) boiling water
COMBINE AND LET STAND UNTIL NEEDED
1 1/2 cup(s) sugar
1 tablespoon(s) shortening
1 large egg
1 teaspoon(s) vanilla
2 3/4 cup(s) flour
1 cup(s) nutmeats (i like pecans but walnuts are good too}
2 teaspoon(s) baking soda
- pinch salt

Steps:

  • Cream sugar and shorting. Add egg. Mix soda with flour and add 1 teaspoon vanilla. Add flour alternately with liquid from dates. Add dates & nuts.
  • Bake 1 hour at 350 in a greased and floured loaf pan. Cool in pan for 5 minutes and cool on a wire rack.
