My Favorite Macaroni and Cheese Recipe image

I got this recipe out of a Betty Crocker cookbook many years ago. I no longer have the book. Whenever I wanted to make the dish again, I would call my daughter and ask her for the ingredients. * I like the flavor of the tomato on top of the casserole.

Number Of Ingredients 8

1 c elbow macaroni
1/4 c chopped onion
1 Tbsp margarine or butter
1 Tbsp all-purpose flour
dash(es) pepper
1 c milk
1 1/2 c shredded cheddar cheese
1 med. tomato (optional)

Steps:

  • 1. Cook macaroni for 10 minutes. Drain well. In med. saucepan, cook onion in margarine or butter until tender, but not brown. Stir in flour and pepper.
  • 2. Add milk all at once. Cook and stir until slightly thick and bubbly. Add cheese, stirring until melted. Stir in macaroni. Put in 1 qt. casserole. Bake in 350 degree oven for 25-30 min. If desired, arrange tomato slices atop macaroni for the last 5 minutes of baking. Let stand 10 min. before serving.
