How to make My Canadian Pea Soup

Number Of Ingredients 8

1 pound(s) dried split peas
3 cup(s) cold water
2 pound(s) smoke ham shank or bones
3 quart(s) boiling water
1 - onion, chopped
1 - celery stalk, chopped
1 teaspoon(s) salt
2 - carrots, minced

Steps:

  • Wash and sort peas; soak in cold water overnight.
  • Drain and place in a large pot; add water, ham bone, onion, celery, carrots and salt.
  • Bring to a boil; reduce heat and simmer until peas are very tender, about 2 hours, adding more water if needed.
  • Remove ham; chop and return to soup.
  • Season to taste with salt and pepper.
