MOM'S SPLIT PEA SOUP image

Number Of Ingredients 12

1 lb dried split peas
4 cups chicken stock
2 cups water
2 carrots
2 ribs celery (best with leaves)
1 onion
1 clove garlic
1 1/2 tsp oregano
1/4 tsp ground black pepper
1/8 tsp cumin
4 to 6 slices fried bacon, diced
Liquid Smoke if desired

Steps:

  • In kettle, combine peas, stock, and water. Bring to boil, reduce heat and simmer for 1 1/2 hours. Add remaining ingredients and bring to a boil. Reduce heat, cover and simmer for 1 hour. Mom adds a little Liquid Smoke to hers. If you prefer a smooth soup (I do) cool the soup and puree in the blender/food processor/VitaMixer.
