Macaroni and Cheese image

This is my mother's Mac & Cheese recipe, she never wrote it down, just showed us how to make it. It's not your typical mac & cheese made with a sauce. The addition of onions is what makes it so good! Enjoy!

Number Of Ingredients 5

1 lb elbow macaroni
1 small onion, diced
2 lbs colby cheese, shredded
1 1/2 - 2 cups of milk
salt

Steps:

  • 1. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil.
  • 2. Add diced onion to the pot while the macaroni is cooking.
  • 3. Cook macaroni for 1 minute less than package directions, then drain.
  • 4. In a buttered 9x13 pan, start with a layer of macaroni (just enough to cover the bottom of the pan) and top with a layer of cheese.
  • 5. Repeat 2 more layers, ending with a heavy layer of cheese.
  • 6. Pour milk over top of casserole, milk should come about half way up the casserole.
  • 7. Bake at 350° for 45-60 minutes, until top is golden brown and milk is absorbed.
