Homemade Chocolate Cake image

My daughter wanted a chocolate cake for her 14th Birthday. I was going to buy a mix, but then my Mom told me about this recipe from Hershey she found. It makes a very rich and moist chocolate cake and the frosting comes out just perfect!

FOR THE CAKE
2 c sugar
1 3/4 c all-purpose flour
3/4 c cocoa
1 1/2 tsp baking powder
1 1/2 tsp baking soda
1 tsp salt
2 eggs
1 c milk
1/2 c vegetable oil
2 tsp vanilla extract
1 c boiling water
4 c chocolate frosting
FOR THE FROSTING
1 stick butter
2/3 c cocoa
3 c powdered sugar
1/3 c milk
1 tsp vanilla extract

Steps:

  • 1. Heat oven to 350°F. Grease and flour two 9-inch round baking pans.
  • 2. Stir together sugar, flour, cocoa, baking powder, baking soda and salt in large bowl. Add eggs, milk, oil and vanilla; beat on medium speed of mixer 2 minutes. Stir in boiling water (batter will be thin). Pour batter into prepared pans.
  • 3. Bake 30 to 35 minutes or until wooden pick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool 10 minutes; remove from pans to wire racks. Cool completely. Frost with chocolate frosting.
  • 4. FOR THE FROSTING
  • 5. Melt butter. Stir in cocoa. Alternately add powdered sugar and milk, beating to spreading consistency. Add small amount additional milk, if needed. Stir in vanilla. About 2 cups frosting.
  • 6. For a 13x9x2-inch baking pan, bake 34-40 min. minutes.
  • 7. For a 3 layer cake using 8-inch round pans, bake 30 to 35
  • 8. For cup cakes, bake 22 to 25 minutes.
