German Vanilla Sugar (Vanillezucker) image

Vanilla sugar is often used in German baking. It can be used in a recipe as well as give the final touches to cakes, pies and cookies. This recipe is simple to prepare and is great to have on hand when needed.

4 cups confectioners' sugar
1 vanilla bean (7-9 inches long)

Steps:

  • Place sugar in a 1-2 quart glass jar that has a tight fitting scew-on lid.
  • Cut vanilla bean so it fits into jar and push it down into the sugar.
  • Place lit tightly on jar and allow to sit for at least 3 day before using.
  • ~NOTE~ This will keep for a very long time. As you use the sugar, you can replace it. The vanilla bean will be good as long as it is fragrant.
