Steps:
- preheat oven to 350. position racks in upper and lower thirds of oven. line 2 rimmed baking sheets with parchment paper
- spread walnut halves on baking sheet and toast for 9 minutes, until they are golden and fragrant. let cook and finely chop
- in large bowl, whisk sugar with cocoa powder and salt. add egg whites and vanilla and beat until batter is moistened. spoon batter onto baking sheets in 12 evenly spaced mounds.
- bake 20 minutes, until tops of cookies are glossy, and lightly cracked and feel firm to the touch.
- cool completely
