French Toast image

This is my go to recipe for French Toast from the Joy of Cooking. I like this recipe because it has a more eggy flavor. We always just make the basic recipe using a good dense white bread and serve with real maple syrup. I've included the full set of suggestions for completeness.

Number Of Ingredients 8

4 eggs
1 cup milk
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon vanilla or 1/2 teaspoon rum
8 slices bread
sugar
cinnamon
bright red jelly

Steps:

  • Prepare pan or griddle for cooking.
  • Beat eggs. Add milk, salt, and flavoring.
  • The bread may be cut in rounds with a doughnut cutter.
  • Dip bread into the mixture and place on griddle. Brown each side of the bread.
  • Serve hot sprinkled with sugar and cinnamon. Garnish with jelly or serve with pie cherries, sweetened, slightly thickened with cornstarch, and flavored with lemon; with applesauce flavored with cinnamon and cloves; or with maple syrup.
