Yield 4-6 servings

Number Of Ingredients 11

1 cup split peas or red lentils
2 cups water
1 small onion, sliced
3/4 tsp. minced garlic
3/4 tsp. minced ginger
1/2 tsp. ground turmeric
1 cup water
3/4 tsp. salt
2 fresh Serrano or jalapeno peppers, seeded and cut into thirds
1 plum tomato, diced
2 TBS. chopped cilantro

Steps:

  • 1. Pick over, rinse and place in a large saucepan lentils 2. Add water, onion, garlic, ginger, turmeric. Simmer, covered, until lentils are tender, 20-30 minutes. Puree and return to saucepan. 3. Stir in water and salt. Simmer, partially covered, until Dal is thickened to consistency of pea soup, about 20 minutes. 4. Stir in pepper, tomato and cilantro. Serve with cooked rice!
