DAD'S GOOD WHITE BREAD image

Yield Makes 4 loaves

Number Of Ingredients 5

11 cups flour
1/4 cup lard or shortening
sugar (about 3/4 cup total)
2 packages dry yeast
1 Tablespoon salt

Steps:

  • Dissolve the year in 1/2 cup warm water with 1 1/2 teaspoons sugar. In large mixing bowl, combine: 1/2 cup sugar, salt, lard, 3 cups warm water, yeast mixture. Add 5 cups flour. Beat with an electric mixer for 3 minutes. Stir remaining 6 cups flour in by hand. Turn onto floured surface and knead 5 minutes. Place in a greased bowl, turning once, cover and let rise 1/2 hour. Punch down, turn over and let rise again until double. Knead a few minutes, then shape into 4 loaves and place in greased, 9x5" loaf pans. Cover loaves with a damp cloth and let rise until doubled. (Optional: brush tops with butter) Bake at 350 degrees F for 30-35 minutes.
