When I saw Lauren Mitchell's and Star Pooley's Caramelized Onion recipes I was inspired to try a dip-(thanks ladies) and I love Trader Joe's Caramelized Onion Dip- so good- but wanted to make my own - so this is the result. My family loves this stuff, as do I. Hope you all try this and let me know if you think it is as tasty as...

Steps:
- 1. Slice onions 1/2 inch thick then chop chunky. In a large skillet over medium heat add the oil and butter. When butter has melted, add the onions and season with salt and pepper and sage. Stir in sugar, to taste. Cook stirring occasionally, until onions are a deep golden brown and look to be caramelized - about 20 minutes. Watch them carefully- so they do not burn. Remove from flame and let cool.
- 2. In a large mixing bowl, beat the cream cheese, sour cream and mayonnaise just until smooth and creamy. Fold in the onion and the juices; adjust seasoning if needed.
- 3. Cover and chill for 2 hours or overnight. Serve with your favorite chips or crusty breads.
