Applesauce Jumbles image

From my mother-in-law's recipe collection.

Number Of Ingredients 13

2 3/4 cup(s) all purpose flour
1 1/2 cup(s) packed brown sugar
1 teaspoon(s) salt
1/2 teaspoon(s) baking soda
3/4 cup(s) applesauce
1/2 cup(s) shortening
2 - eggs
1 teaspoon(s) ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon(s) vanilla
1/4 teaspoon(s) ground cloves
1 cup(s) raisins
1 cup(s) chopped nuts, if desired
- browned butter glaze (below)

Steps:

  • Mix all ingredients, except glaze. (If dough is soft, cover and refrigerate). Heat oven to 375. Drop dough by rounded teaspoonfuls about 2 inches apart onto ungreased cookie sheet.
  • Bake until almost no indentation remains when touched, about 10 minutes. Immediately remove from cookie sheet. Cool; spread with Browned Butter Glaze. *If using self rising flour, omit salt and baking soda.
  • For Browned Butter Glaze: Heat 1/3 cup butter over low heat until golden brown; remove from heat. Stir in 2 cups powdered sugar and 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla. Beat in 2-4 tablespoons hot water until smooth and of desired consistency.
