Number Of Ingredients 11

1/2 cup all-purpose flour
3/8 cup thick and rough oatmeal (old fashioned roll oats may be substituted)
3/8 cup firmly packed light brown sugar
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 stick butter, cut into bits and softened
1/2 cup chopped walnuts (optional)
4 apples, peeled and sliced
2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice (one lemon)
2 tablespoons granulated sugar
whipped cream or vanilla ice cream

Steps:

  • In a bowl stir together well the flour, the oats, the brown sugar, the cinnamon, and the salt. Add the butter, blend the mixture until it resembles coarse meal, and stir in the walnuts. In a large bowl toss the apples with the lemon juice and the granulated sugar and transfer the mixture to a buttered 10-inch (2 quart) glass pie plate. Crumble the topping evenly over the apple mixture and bake the crisp in the middle of a preheated 375°F. oven for 25 to 30 minutes, or until the apples are cooked through and the top is golden. Let the crisp stand for 10 minutes and serve it warm with whipped cream or ice cream.
