My mom used to make this for all of us and I still make it today. It is one of our favorites and it's cheep to make. I don't know for sure how long it takes to make--times are a guess.

1 lb hamburger meat
1 egg, beaten
cracker, crumbled finely
salt and pepper
oil

Steps:

  • Heat a small amount of oil in your pan for frying.
  • Mix up meat and salt and pepper form into patties.
  • Dip in the egg.
  • Roll in cracker crumbs.
  • Place in the oil and cook until needing to be flipped then flip and finish until desired doneness.
  • Can be topped with mushroom soup for gravy or you can make a milk gravy.
  • Other substitutions are adding garlic powder or onion soup mix or Worcestershire sauce.

1 cup crushed saltine crackers (about 30 crackers)
1/3 cup water
Salt and pepper to taste
2 pounds ground beef
1/4 cup all-purpose flour
2 tablespoons canola oil
2 cans (10-3/4 ounces each) condensed cream of mushroom soup, undiluted
Hot mashed potatoes or noodles

Steps:

  • In a large bowl, combine cracker crumbs, water, salt and pepper. Crumble beef over mixture and mix well. Press into an ungreased 9-in. square pan. Cover and refrigerate for at least 3 hours. , Cut into 3-in. squares; dredge in flour. In a large skillet, heat oil over medium heat; add beef and cook until browned on both sides, 2-3 minutes on each side. , Transfer to a 3-qt. slow cooker with a slotted spatula or spoon. Add soup. , Cover and cook on high until meat is no longer pink, 4 hours. Serve with mashed potatoes or noodles.

"ON A PASTOR'S BUDGET and with seven children, we didn't have steak very often. But we were just as satisfied with this wonderful dish Mom dreamed up-a country-style "steak" with creamy gravy. It was always a hit with our family.

1 cup water
1 cup cracker crumbs
1 teaspoon salt
3 pounds ground beef
All-purpose flour
2 to 3 tablespoons canola oil
1 can (10-3/4 ounces) condensed cream of mushroom soup, undiluted

Steps:

  • In a large bowl, combine water, cracker crumbs and salt; add beef and mix well. Press into a 15x10x1-in. baking pan lined with waxed paper. Cover and refrigerate overnight. , Cut the meat into 12 squares. Coat each square lightly with flour. In a large skillet, cook over medium heat in oil, a few pieces at a time, until a thermometer reads 160° and juices run clear; drain. , Remove waxed paper from the baking pan; spread the soup in bottom of pan. 1 cup cracker crumb
1 teaspoon salt
1 onion, chopped fine
1 can cream of mushroom soup or 1 can cream of onion soup

Steps:

  • Mix well and shape in a loaf.
  • Let it sit in the refrigerator for at least 8 hours or overnight.
  • Slice in pieces and fry until brown.
