THREE BEAN CROCK POT CASSEROLE

Three Bean Crock Pot Casserole image

Easy three beans and three steps (a,b,c). Good for open houses or where people drop in. Stays warm in crock pot. I kinda think this is from the 1950's. My great grandma, my grandma, my mom and now I cook it. One of my sisters cooks it and I'm working on my daughter to cook it too! (diabetes substitutions at bottom of recipe).

Yield 8-12 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 12

1 cup warm water
2 (15 ounce) cans baked beans, Bush name, undrained
2 (12 ounce) cans lima beans, drained
2 (12 ounce) cans kidney beans, drained
2 1/3 cups ketchup

1 cup Spam (optional) or 1 cup ham, chopped (optional)

Steps:

  • (Diabetes substitutions at bottom of recipe).
  • Before Part take 1 cup warm water and put it into the crock pot and turn it on high. This is sort of to preheat the pot; without water it would crack see.
  • Part take the beans section and warm in microwave or on stove top until steaming. Stir and pour into the crock pot (nice to use maple or honey flavor beans).
  • Part ketchup, mustard, brown sugar, liquid smoke, vinegar. This is like a sauce. Simmer and stir on stove top or microwave until turns brown and smells less vinegary (20 minutes maybe). Dump into the crock pot and stir well.
  • Part meat and onion; brown on stove top or in microwave together then dump it in pot.
  • See how it goes a, b c all warm before going into the pot. Put on the lid and keep on high for on hour and 5-8 hours on low then serve with rice and cornbread, cheese shredded on top or glass of milk Complete meal for open houses or crowds of people. Stays warm in pot and is easy to self serve.
  • Diabetes substitutions: Can substitute tomato paste for ketchup and powdered mustard for regular. Add water a little and artificial sweetener comes in brown sugar flavor. The Bush baked beans can use navy beans plain and use brown rice instead of white rice. See these are all diabetes or trying to lose wight substitutions. You can also add wheat germ to the corn bread.

Betty's 3-Bean Hot Dish (a la Minnesota) image

My dearest 80-something friend Betty gave me this sensational, hearty recipe for a 3-bean hot dish. She's Finnish, I believe this has roots to home, and it's really tasty! My hubby, who hates beans, demanded I get the recipe. We first devoured it at Betty and Jim's 60th wedding anniversary! Perfect for potlucks.

THREE-BEAN BAKED BEANS (OVEN OR CROCK POT)

Three-Bean Baked Beans (Oven or Crock Pot) image

This is my summer time dish for all BBQ's and I always double the recipe. If you enjoy baked beans you have to try this one. It's from a '98 TOH and whenever I make it someone always asks for the recipe. I have personally never made it in the oven since the crock pot does just fine and who wants to heat up the house in the summer? When using the crock pot I will take the lid off for the last hour or so (+/-) of cooking - this will thicken it up if you like your beans thick right at serving. Leftovers freeze very well.

3 BEAN HOT DISH

3 Bean Hot Dish image

This is a recipe that has been in my family for many years. It is a very simple recipe. Everyone loves it and it is can be made in the oven or a crock pot; so we bring it to potlucks a lot! Always a hit!

Time 1h30m

Yield 6-8 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 12

1 lb hamburger
1/2 lb bacon
1/2 cup onion, chopped
1/4 teaspoon pepper
1/2 cup ketchup
1 tablespoon mustard
3/4 cup brown sugar
2 tablespoons vinegar
1 teaspoon salt
1 (15 1/2 ounce) can butter beans
1 (15 1/2 ounce) can kidney beans
1 (20 ounce) can baked beans (Bush's)

Steps:

  • Brown the bacon & let it cool. Some of the bacon grease may be saved and added in with the hamburger if you choose too.
  • Cut or break the bacon into bite size pieces.
  • While bacon is cooling brown the hamburger with the chopped onion and pepper, then drain of the grease if needed.
  • Add the bacon (and bacon grease if you choose to) to the hamburger.
  • Mix together the ketchup, mustard, brown sugar, vinegar and salt.
  • Stir this in to the hamburger/bacon mixture.
  • Stir in all the cans of beans.
  • Bake in large baking dish in 350 degree oven for 1 hour or in your crock pot on high about 3-4 hours.
  • A few hints for everyone. Any leftovers may be frozen, so you may enjoy at a later time without the prep work. You may also use your own favorite beans instead of those suggested in the recipe -- lima beans, pork and beans, red beans, northern beans, etc. Sometimes, depending on how many people I am serving, I will use 1 1/2 lbs. of hamburger and an extra can or 2 of beans and it is always just as good.
  • Enjoy!

I got this really good baked bean recipe from my friend Patty. You cook it in the crockpot. You can change the different beans you use. Like I have used black beans and or red beans instead of butter beans. Or one can of each.
