1 quart half and half
1 can condensed milk
2 cups sugar
1 tablespoon vanilla extract
whole milk to fill container

Steps:

  • Mix all ingredients except whole milk into a one gallon ice cream freezer.
  • Add whole milk to reach the top of the fill line on the container.
  • Swish the dasher a few times to combine the milk with other ingredients.
  • Add crushed ice to the top of the bucket, sprinkling ice cream salt over the layers as you fill the bucket.
  • As the ice melts, add more layers of ice and salt.
  • Freezer until the freezer stalls and ice cream is ready.

This old-time ice cream recipe was actually my great-great-grandmother's recipe. I've tried a lot of different homemade ice cream recipes, but this one always stands out as my family's favorite!

Number Of Ingredients 6

5 eggs
3 cups sugar
2 tablespoons flour
2 (12 ounce) cans evaporated milk
1 tablespoon vanilla
whole milk

Steps:

  • Beat egg yolks with half of sugar and all of flour. Mix until creamy. Add evaporated milk then add rest of sugar and vanilla.
  • Beat egg whites until fairly stiff. Fold into above mixture. Put in ice cream freezer and add whole milk, leaving about 1 1/2 inches at top of freezer.
  • Freeze in ice cream freezer. Makes 1 gallon.

  • Whisk all ingredients together until sugar dissolves.

  • After the ice cream is made, transfer to an airtight container, cover tightly and freeze .

With summer on its way, Grandma's Homemade Ice Cream is a custard-style vanilla frozen treat the entire family will enjoy.

4 Tablespoons flour
3 ½ cups sugar
1 gallon milk
8 to 10 eggs (beaten)
Vanilla (to taste up to one Tablespoon)
1 pint half and half or heavy whipping cream

Steps:

  • Mix flour and sugar.
  • Put 1 quart of whole milk in saucepan on stove to warm.
  • When hot, add sugar mixture, stirring constantly until it starts to thicken.
  • Add beaten eggs to hot milk mixture, tempering the egg mixture first to prevent cooking the beaten eggs.
  • Cook, stirring constantly until mixture thickens like a custard.
  • Remove from heat and cool completely.
  • Once cooled, add vanilla to taste - up to 1 Tablespoon.
  • Add to ice cream freezer insert.
  • Add pint of cream or whole milk to about an inch from the top.
  • Freeze per the instructions for your ice cream freezer.
  • Eat right away or freeze to get a firmer texture.
