MARTINI ON THE ROCKS

A martini straight up will wilt on a hot day, but on the rocks it's just right.

3 ounces London Dry-style gin
3/4 ounce dry vermouth
1 small strip of lemon peel

Steps:

  • Fill a mixing glass with ice. Pour in gin and vermouth. Stir for 30 seconds, then strain into an old-fashioned glass over fresh ice. Twist the lemon peel over the drink, then drop it in.

2 1⁄4 ounces gin or vodka
3⁄4 ounce dry vermouth
Olives

Steps:

  • Combine the liquid ingredients in a rocks glass filled with a few sizable pieces of ice. Stir briefly, about 5 seconds, to chill. Add an olive or two. Your work is done.

Ice cubes
1 part berry vodka (recommended: Skyy Berry)
1/2 part creme de cassis (recommended: Hiram Walker)
1/2 part amaretto (recommended: Disaronno)
1/2 part lemon/lime soda
Freshly squeezed lime juice
Fresh cherry, for garnish

Steps:

  • Chill martini glasses.
  • Put ice cubes in a shaker. Pour in vodka, cream de cassis, amaretto, and lemon/lime soda.. Squeeze in lime juice. Shake. Strain into chilled martini glass. Garnish with a fresh cherry.

MOM'S RAISIN ROCK COOKIES

This was my mom's favorite cookie recipe. In fact, I don't remember her making any other cookies (besides chocolate chip). I think the "rocks" are the walnuts. I'm totally guessing at the "time to make" and number of cookies it makes because I bake cookies even less frequently than Mom did. Please feel free to correct

2 cups seedless raisins
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 1/2 cups brown sugar
1 cup butter, softened
1 pinch salt
3 eggs
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 teaspoon nutmeg
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
3 cups flour
1 -1 1/2 cup chopped walnuts

Steps:

  • Put raisins in a large sauce pan. Add enough water to the pan to cover the raisins.
  • Simmer 5 minutes.
  • Remove from heat. Add baking soda to pan and let cool. Drain when cool.
  • Cream butter and sugar together.
  • Add salt, eggs, spices, vanilla, flour, walnuts, and drained raisins. Mix well.
  • Drop by rounded tablespoons on a greased baking sheet.
  • Bake at 400 degrees apx 12 minutes per batch.

1 cup ice cubes
1 ½ fluid ounces light rum
1 fluid ounce lime juice
1 fluid ounce triple sec
1 teaspoon white sugar
1 lime wedge
2 tablespoons white sugar, or as needed

Steps:

  • Blend ice, rum, lime juice, triple sec, and 1 teaspoon sugar in a blender on the highest setting until smooth, 15 to 20 seconds. Pour into glass.
  • Spread 2 tablespoons sugar in a thin layer onto a small plate. Rub lime wedge around the rim of a glass. Dip glass rim in sugar to coat. Pour blended beverage into the prepared glass to serve.
