The classic cereal snack mix often goes by the name "nuts and bolts," making it a perfect treat for a handy dad. Our version is made with an addictive blend of savory seasonings and spices.

3 cups toasted corn cereal, such as Chex
1 1/2 cups bite-size pretzels
1 cup salted dry-roasted peanuts
2 garlic cloves
1/2 teaspoon coarse salt
5 tablespoons unsalted butter
2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
1 1/2 teaspoons paprika
1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1/4 cup fresh rosemary

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 225 degrees. Combine toasted corn cereal, pretzels, and peanuts in a large bowl. Mince garlic and mash into a paste with salt. Stir together garlic paste, melted butter, Worcestershire sauce, paprika, and cayenne pepper. Pour over cereal mixture; toss to coat using a rubber spatula. Spread mixture evenly on a rimmed baking sheet. Bake, gently stirring every 20 minutes, until toasted, about 1 hour 20 minutes. Add rosemary. Bake for 20 minutes more. Let cool completely.

A 1940's version of the Chex type party mixes. Originally published by the Spice Island Seasoning Company to introduce their spices. This was a holiday tradition when I was growing up. Great for parties, snacking and gift giving.

1 (14 ounce) box Corn Chex
1 (14 ounce) box Rice Chex
1 (14 ounce) box Wheat Chex
1 (15 ounce) box Cheerios toasted oat cereal
1 (16 ounce) bag pretzel sticks
4 (11 1/2 ounce) cans salted mixed nuts
1 tablespoon seasoning salt
1 tablespoon smoke salt
1 teaspoon marjoram
1 teaspoon summer savory
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1/2 teaspoon onion powder
1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1 lb butter, melted

Steps:

  • Mix all cereal ingredients together in a large roaster or roasting pan. A Nesco electric roaster works best.
  • Mix spices together and toss with cereal ingredients.
  • Pour melted butter over cereal and spices. Mix to coat thoroughly.
  • Bake at 250 degrees, turning every 15 minutes until cereal is crisp and golden brown. Baking time is usually 1 to 1 1/2 hours.
  • This recipe makes a large batch of mix. The cereal and spice amounts may be adjusted according to taste.

This snack mix is addictive! Our family and friends just love it! Enjoy! My new favorite combination is shown in the picture above. Rice Chex Cereal ~ lightly salted peanuts ~ goldfish pretzels

1 stick butter
1 tsp seasoned salt
1 tsp garlic powder
4 tsp worcestershire sauce
2 c corn chex cereal
2 c rice chex cereal
2 c wheat chex cereal
1 1/2 c salted mixed nuts
1 1/2 c pretzel sticks
* i have also just used 6 cups of my favorite chex cereal, instead of 2 cups of each.

Steps:

  • 1. Melt butter in a large roaster pan, stir in seasoned salt, garlic powder, and Worcestershire sauce.
  • 2. Add cereal, nuts, and pretzels. Stir over low heat for 15 minutes, or until all pieces are coated.
  • 3. Cool on a baking sheet lined with paper towel. Store in a air tight container. Enjoy

2 cups shredded wheat cereal
2 cups Rice Chex
2 cups Cheerios toasted oat cereal
1/2 cup butter, melted
1 1/2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
1 teaspoon seasoning salt
1 cup pretzel stick
3/4 cup dry roasted peanuts
3/4 cup raisins (optional)

Steps:

  • Spread cereal mixture in a large shallow pan (cookie sheet). Set aside.
  • In a saucepan, melt butter and add Worcestershire sauce and blend well.
  • Drizzle butter mixture over cereal, stir to coat. Sprinkle with seasoned salt.
  • Stir in pretzels and peanuts.
  • Bake at 350°F for 18-20 minutes or until lightly browned and crisp.
  • Stir often to prevent scorching.
  • Raisins may be added after baking, if desired.
  • Allow to cool completely, then store in air-tight container.
